hey guys, finally crunch time has come, and im in need of a new desktop PC, i will be using the PC for simple day to day use, i.e, surfing the web, Microsoft office, and then photo editing, using cs6 and lightroom.
i dont have much of a budget, and dont really want to go past 650,
so my question is this... is there anything really wrong with this specification for what i need it to do?

CIT Fortress Case with USB 3.0
AMD Trinity A10-5800K Processor 3.8GHz
AMD Stock Cooler
Generic thermal paste
Asus F2A85-M LE Motherboard
8GB Corsair PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 Memory (2 x 4GB sticks)
Integrated AMD Radeon Graphics
120GB Samsung 840 Series Solid State Drive
2000GB 7200RPM Hard Disk - 6Gbps
24x SATA DVD-RW Drive
EZCool Basic 500W PSU
Onboard High Definition Audio
300Mbps 802.11n Wireless PCIe Adaptor (for Wireless networks)
Windows 8 64 bit
Standard Chillblast Cable Management
24" Asus VS239HR IPS Widescreen LED Monitor
Logitech Cordless Keyboard and Mouse

any input would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like you're planning a DIY computer! Why not take a look at "off the shelf" desktop units? For about £300-400, you could get a decent rig (I bought a Win8 specc'ed desktop), then if you need a monitor seperately, you have plenty left over in your budget.

If you have the space available go for two monitors ... a small 15/17" as the primary and you have the "Desktop" on and use for mail, directory listings &c and the second for you main work

I'd love to pick a "off the shelf" PC , but what I've seen around have nowhere near the specification as mentioned in my first post, I.e, the SSD drive, 2tb HHD, decent (I think??) processor, plus for 650 that comes with a 23" IPS screen. If you guys are running photoshop with cheaper units with no problems at al,l then I'd be more than happy to save a few £££ for a new lens

Thanks for your replies!

We are running PS CS5 with PCs that are far, far less than what you are proposing.

When we replace we will buy off the shelf and perhaps specify a few changes if we want to. For example, we specified the video card last time, but everything else was as supplied.
Best regards, John

I always build my own too. nevr had an off the shelf job. I like to pick the bits to suit me.

I'd also recommend two monitors. Especially for Lightroom. having the secondary display enabled always showing the Loupe view make a huge difference to workflow.

I'd also get at least 12Gb of memory ( RAM isn't expensive these days

I hope you mean 12GB!

He is also looking at a 120GB SSD which does make page swaps easier and quicker so could make do with just 8GB.

I use a SSD OS drive, and regularly use 12Gb of RAM using lightroom. I recently upgraded from 6Gb to 24Gb. Well worth it.

Thanks again guys! Very helpful of you, if the monitor and RAM count are the only points for questionable improvement, I'm a happy chap, I'm sure I can add these at a later date if I need them, hopefully this unit will last me a few years, again thanks for your comments, opinions are very welcome!

I agree, 12GB ram will provide you with better performance, if you can stretch to 2*8GB Modules that would be great.

The Samsung SSD looks a little under par on write speed, the Corsair 120GB Force 3 SSD - SATA-III 2.5 appears to perform significantly faster - if this is your first build using SSDs, take a close look at performance on read and write and the effect of write speed degradation due to TRIM.

You may need to take a look at the graphics card if you are running two monitors - the ASUS monitor has HDMI and the best setups use identicle monitors (note you will need to independently colour calibrate each monitor) and your graphics card would be best if it supported two HDMI outputs, this means the integrated graphis may limit you.

Just a note on RAM and lots of it.

Since installing 24Gb of RAM, I've created a RAMDrive on 4Gb of it. And then assigned it as a temp drive for various programs, including ACR Cache for Lightroom.

RAM is a lot faster than even a SSD drive

120 GB SSD sounds a bit small, why not get 256GB? 8GB of DDR3 RAM should be enough, I have that and I've no problem with editing using Lightroom and CS6. If you want to do video editing it would be better to get more though.

I also had to bite that bullet recently due to the 3Gb limit on Win XP and an ancient CPU. Follow the advice that you've been given above and you wont go wrong.

Go for some decent thermal paste, Arctic Silver is the best IMHO it will shave a couple of degrees off your running temperature.

Take everyone's advice and max out on decent ram now. Do you spend a lot of time on the machine, do you also play games when you should be working? If so get a low noise cpu cooler and case fans.

2TB of data is a lot to lose and no drive will last for ever, what are you going to do about backing up all that stuff?
As for me, all I know is that I know nothing.
