This seems quite a good idea.

I can't really see the point of scanning negatives with a smartphone...why not just take pictures with the phone instead? They'll be better quality than scans, and there's enough apps available to make them look like any film you want.

Surely it's the same rationale as any neg scanning? If you have a pre-digital collection of material, OR you're a current analogue fan, you'll probably want the shots available for editing, viewing, etc? I have 1000's of slides/negs from my pre-digital days and would like them more accessible. Also, don't overlook this is from Lomo.

Still using 35mm, and usually dissapointed with Scans CD provided. Only improvement would be a way to scan slides too.

Still hasn't stopped me ordering one 5 mins ago!

I have a Plustek 7500i neg/slide scanner.

I think if you've got a pre-digital collection of negatives that presumably have a lot of nostalgic or historical value ( or are even still shooting on film ) you'd want to use something a tad better than this smart phone scanner to digitise them.

Product makes no sense to me

Agreed! But these don't. With no lens built into the copier, and mounting to your own lens, you are able to use extension tubes, bellows or whatever to get the magnification factor that you want. And use the best lens you have for this application. 50mm lens plus 32mm of extension tube is 1:1 at the minimum zoom of the slide duplicator.

Issue for me guys is the sheer volume of negs and slide, plus the pp. Guess I'll have to spend time weeding out the dross first, but I'm pretty sure I'll still be left with 100's of negs/slides to digitise.

Most likely a dedicated scanner would be better, however this is very compact and with my 12MP camera phone, the only way to know how good it is to give it a go. As long as it does not scratch my negatives it's worth a go for me.

Be interested to know how you get on. My problem in the past has been to get the same colours and quality as the original prints.

The dyes in the negs/slides decay at uneven rates. I've found tweaking the RGB tone curves is required in a lot of cases. While colours can be problematic, I've found the IQ to be much better than the original prints. better resolution, better dynamic range, etc,etc

Scanning device arrived today, took about 5 mins to set up and these are the first results, the only adjustment (appart from colour reversal!) was to ajust colour balance, so this is the contrast and exposure straight from the divice:
