Location was an airfield in Cheshire where my son was having a flying lesson on a fixed wing microlight.
I did experiment with focal lengths combined from about 350-600. Sweet spot for me was about 180-200 on the Tamron...say about 360-400 equivalent combined but performance at 600mm when I nailed the focus was surprisingly good. Apertures were either f4.5 or f5.6 on Tamron so double that at the sensor.
All images are JPEG straight from camera, no adjustments so you can see extent of fringeing, distortion etc. Image 5 is a 33% crop for comparison.
I shall experiment further over the next few weeks using different subject matter.
1. What 600mm looks like

2. Windsock from about 100 yards

3. Taxi

4. Landing

5. Taxi 2 with 33% crop.

What exactly was the 'technique' Gareth? I wouldn't mind trying this myself.

They actually look a lot better enlarged . I saved them to 1000pix but they are displayed even smaller. My best one (not posted) is my new screensaver at 1680 pix and looks fantastic with a small amount of treatment.
I was just surprised at how much potential there might be in the low cost combo i used.
I'm also planning to match the convertor with the SMC M 80-200 f4.5...i've got high hopes for that and wil l post some images if they look ok once i've tried them together.
