I don't have a telly either... But I do have a computer with a TV-card and of course a Digital TV receiver box. A very good solution if one wants to minimize the amount of stuff in one's room and you can watch telly while surfin' on the Internet too.[quote:3496ace15f="womble"]Not getting a TV when I moved here in 2002 was the best decision I ever made.

I wrote to them when I first moved in stating that as this was a rented apartment it had a TV aerial socket but that I wasn't using it and had no intention of doing so, and have never heard from them since. I have heard of other people being hassled though. It is a funny world where not having a TV seems incomprehensible. What I find interesting is how many people start conversations with "Did you see... last night?" even when they know I don't have a TV, and some even continue to discuss it as if I cared. Very odd...womble wrote:

Our office at work used to be occupied and had a TV license.
When 'Mac' died, a shock to us all, his flat became part of the property and the licence lapsed.
After several years and quite a few visits the authorities agrees we don't need one.
Guess what arrived last month?s

what I want to know is, if you dont have a TV reciever and so dont have a TV license, can you get away with watching TV on your PC?
Not that I'm wanting to fiddle the BBC of course, god forbid me even having such thoughts
Anyway we just spent a fortune on a new 46" Samsung Backlit model, all we need now is a HD reciever
And to think I could have had a 300mmDA* and a divorce instead

No. the licence is for TV receiver equipment. This argument came up when VCRs appeared. People tried to get away with a VCR and a monitor.

The only things I watch on BBC are Ashes to Ashes, Dr Who, and Top Gear. For several years we were paying for content that we couldn't receive, in the form of BBC digital channels. There was no talk of partial refunds or reduced licence fees.
TV Licencing gained my everlasting scorn when they more or less called me a liar in print for writing to them and explaining that no, I didn't have a TV in my hall of residence. Frankly they seem to be a law unto themselves, allowed to harass and bully the general public with no accountability.
"Detector vans" are a load of rubbish by the way, they're just minibuses. All they do is find addresses with no licence and hassle them.

No, detector vans did work, but when was the last time you saw one?
These days they simply assume every household has a TV.
For me, it's Top gear, Spooks, Dr Who, the one about the pathologists and one or two documentaries on BBC4.

Apparently you need a licence to watch 'live' transmissions by the BBC over the internet, but not recorded ones!
How can they tell?

They are still there but a lot smaller and some of the staff have hand held devices too. But given the newer technology with screen and very low power LOs current television technology is near impossible to detect except when very close.

Imagine if Clarkson was to make a Top Gear Programme about photography.
What camera would he slag off? Which would he rave about?
