Across Riddlesdown, at 14mm

That is the traditional thinking - that is being challenged here really, and it has been my suspicion for a while that we may be accepting a rendition of such scenes that is in fact constrained by the technology of single shots and the processing, It may be more helpful to think in terms of 'constr...

Across Riddlesdown, at 14mm

Yes. But HDR, and PP shadow recovery, and highlight reconstruction and a grad filter are, in the present context, all just tools for compensating for the sensor's lack of DR. Each have their strengths and weakness - but the fundamental limitation is the sensor and if it's DR is sufficient none of...

Across Riddlesdown, at 14mm

The "darkest" DNG did encompass pretty much the whole dynamic range of the scene. The sensor's dynamic range is (close to) adequate, providing you expose to just avoid blowing highlights. If a conventionally "correct" exposure had been used, the highlights would have been blown - as in the "darker"...

Test of the SMC-F 70-210

I know it is only a test shot, but shows the creamy bokeh of this very fine lens. Oh, and MattyH, your windows need cleaning.....LOL

K-3 and IR in my favourite location

I wonder what an images would look like shooting in the medium wave section of the electromagnetic spectrum :) ( if you could get a sensor that could recieve it of course :) )

K-3 and IR in my favourite location

I wonder what an images would look like shooting in the medium wave section of the electromagnetic spectrum :) ( if you could get a sensor that could recieve it of course :) ) No idea on that one Smeggy. Regarding your previous observation about producing effects similar to IR by tweaking the colou...

K-3 and IR in my favourite location

I wonder what an images would look like shooting in the medium wave section of the electromagnetic spectrum :) ( if you could get a sensor that could recieve it of course :) ) IIRC the much longer wavelength would mean there'd be very low resolution. In addition I think only the rock would reflect r...

another HDR post

The process gets a bad press, and has become associated with that over-detailed, over-saturated gravelly texture and highly raised shadows that go beyond the natural. As has been said a few times lately, it is really just another 'tool' to compensate for the DR limitations of the sensor. It works w...

For the light

Louise, That's a lovely image that conveys the calm before sunset. I like the way the flare was controlled. The black frame does nothing for me however. Regarding your plan to print 10X8 you do know that as the Pentax sensor is a 3 to 2 ratio and 10X8 is 5 to 4 then some manipulation of your image ...

K3 and DA* 50-135 go to a rugby match

So reflecting on Smeggies quote; why not push up the ISO, ? Modern cameras like the K-5 and K-3 can handle much higher than 800 and still produce great results, even up to ISO 6400 I was brought up photographically on basic principles where quality in action photography was driven by two prin...

K-5 In Camera HDR

We were at Little Moreton Hall today and I've just done a new EPZ blog showing some of the images. I was very impressed with the in camera HDR of the K-5, and I hadn't actually used it before. This scene had far too great a brightness range for the sensor, but switching in the HDR on the first step ...

Chester Zoo, Bank Holiday Monday , April 2014

Gareth, Blimey that was quite a co-incidence...I think its great value. I would be particularly interested to see how it performs with the K5 if you've still got that. It's great with the 12MP sensor but will it be found wanting with the 16MP? Make sure you post something with it once you've got ...

Misty Blue

Thanks Ronnie. A bit of background to the shot. It was an outing with my photo club and I arrived home late from work to a text message telling me that as the weather was fine we were going to pop out and head to the beach :-) My K-5 was battery drained and charger had gone missing so figured I ...

Misty Blue

For me you could do with bit more light/detail in the foreground. Is it oil spots or staining on the sensor? The staining is a known problem with the early K5's and was sorted under warrenty.

First set with DA*300

I'm not saying that Facebook and other social media sites have nothing to offer photography, serious amateurs, professional and all. They are another promotional avenue, and as subsets of themselves (like the groups you mention) bring people and photographs together. But thats not the 'mainstream' (...

2 More birds

This begs the question, have Ricoh/Pentax got a death wish No, My Ricoh CX 5 (£60.00) and K100D (£60.00 s/h) perform faultlessly week after week. So far... Must be very frustrating for early adopters after all that fuss with sensor stains on early K5s.

Manchester City parade

Great picture of Sir Vincent, it was a great night. Hope you don't mind me posting them on this thread but I got a few shots with the MX-1 at the parade. Not great shots as I had to grab them while trying not to lose my sky blue clad son in a sea of sky blue, but I was impressed by a couple of a...

Stained glass windows and HDR

....Why would the bright light through the glass suddenly drop so much once it hits the stone edge? It wouldn't, it would brighten the stone frame considerably, as in your HDR.... and ....Light levels from the glass shine through onto the stonework, progressively lessening as they fall furth...

Stained glass windows and HDR

I accept you point on the way that lighting reaches the camera sensor, ie coming from two different sources (direct & reflected) it will have a very different impact ... however, that 'effect' is simply yet another technical deficiency of the camera sensor, much like the dynamic range limit is - and...
