Boats Under Bridge
I feel a 'photo processing shootout' coming on ... I'm in  Its amazing what has been recovered here, great testimony both to the capabilities of the Sagelight software and the camera sensor ... From the photo Alastair posted who'd have thought there was any stonework to be seen under tha...

Waterfall
As far as the original image goes, there's a vertical branch running to the top just left of centre, I'd crop it just to the right of this branch and use it as a vertical shot (possibly cropping the bottom too). I don't think the left hand side of the image adds much and it detracts from the waterfa...

A few snaps from my new GR!
Hi everyone, been away for a while from the forum (and the country), hope Santa brought you something nice and Pentaxy (Or Ricohy) at Xmas! :) I was debating between a Q or an MX-1 before Xmas but got a GR in the end! I'm loving this little camera - It is truly pocketable and the IQ is nothing sh...

Light pods in Bournemouth
I've seen those installations during winter holidays, I thought they'd been removed by now. Never mind, I shall revisit this place soon myself again. Great targets for your Pentax sensor and metering tools, not to mention the atmosphere

When 100MP DSLRs arrive will we all go around snapping with ultra wide angle lenses attached abd then then pick several crops from on frame when we get home? Only those of us who can afford *very* good wide angle lenses. Or who don't care about IQ. Where will the MP race end? At the point wh...

Gary, just as a matter of interest, have you worked out what the focal length equivalent would be for your cropped shot? I'll check again but I'm sure I was at 300mm so a FOV of 450mm. If I assume you mean the image shown (crop) to be straight off sensor then I don't know what it would equate to,...

what bird
Deffo a carrion crow Did you sneeze on your sensor or use a Nikon? It's absolutely filthy.

K3 & F*250-600mm, first test inc. RAW file!
Interestingly I've found my K-5 files can take more sharpening than the K-7 files. Don't know why this should be. They have different sensors and different resolution. I've found the same (well between k30/k01 and k7 in my case). I'm pretty sure it is because the K5 sensor generation has got lower ...

Motor racing - Donington Park, March 23
The rain and hail somehow missed the circuit until the weekend's final race, Alan. I headed towards the southbound M1 at that point, with kit still wholly dry... They look like they could be dust on the sensor (though I thought raindrops first given your earlier comment) It's just the sort of backgr...

Heron wide open on A*300 + 2x-s
Having done my good deed for the day and brought back one of the nice old Pentax lenses from the states I managed to get out at lunch with it and caught this. It's had a lot of cleaning up to remove distracting background and I'm not good at gimp or cloning so there's probably loads of artifacts if ...

Thanks for trying that Rob, I've been experimenting a bit as well - unfortunately can't post the images until very late tonight as I don't have a strong enough WiFi connection for my laptop for now. The next darkest image was very underexposed, I doubt you'd get much quality brightening out of it...

 now I never thought I might provoke that  .. So I've been told so far to buy a K5 & a set of Hitechs - this is proving to be an expensive shot! But at least we agree that such a scene is beyond the DR of a sensor such as that in the K7 - I believe many would not. gwing wrote ... 'W...

I must be missing some of the plot here. I copied the image labelled "IMAGE A) Mid Range (Darker) bracket - PDCU unadjusted" and dropped it into Photoshop Elements. I then saved it unaltered as a psd file and imported that into Lightroom 5.3. A few minutes twiddling with sliders in the Deve...

Across Riddlesdown, at 14mm
Just to be clear, Nigel kindly supplied me two raws to work on for single image processing. The brighter normally exposed one was unusable due to blown highlights and any further ETTR would have been worse. The dark one, although underexposed, still had some blown highlights together with shadows n...

what would an untrained eye have seen "on the day"? Squinting into the bright sky, would one also have been able to see into the depths of the darkest shadows? Never mind the fancy DR jargon, what did it look like? The scene was lit by quite diffused lighting through a lot of cloud cover, so yes, th...

:) These are all valiant & superb efforts. What I do find curious, and a bit ironic, is the extraordinary commitment to the single file option .... originally this debate kicked off with comments about the non-necessity for HDR, and how much more trouble it was - the word 'hassle' was used to descr...

How can this be any good for IQ? The camera sensor records most of its quality data in the upper half of the spectrum - thats the rationale behind 'ETTR'. Yep By underexposing most of the scene are we not throwing away so much of the best quality data the camera could record? Nope. The highl...

That is the traditional thinking - that is being challenged here really, and it has been my suspicion for a while that we may be accepting a rendition of such scenes that is in fact constrained by the technology of single shots and the processing, but does not in fact display the DR as the eye can d...
