Curved sensor

Lenses project a curved image onto a flat surface, and good ones do it very well, managing to keep centre and edges in sharp focus at the same time. This is especially true of macro lenses, which are often used to make flat copies. A cheap lens will show field curvature and at wider apertures the...

Curved sensor

The other thing is deliberate field curvature and Minolta made a VC lens where the amount of curvature could be dialled in. This made semi-circular groups of people easy to photograph without distortion and whilst keeping them all sharp. It's not been a mainstream idea that's caught on in any great ...

Curved sensor

Think the rumor has been discarded as fake. At least in regards to the GR.

Curved sensor

Varible field curvature lenses are an entirely different concept to curved sensor. lenses manipulate circular lens groups to modify the peripheral field curvature projected on to a FLAT plane, this is a very different concept to projecting on to a curved plane. I can see it possibly working for...

Curved sensor

Sadly it's not likely to be about the results, but the fact it's curved (i.e. about to become trendy). Curved Tv screens are dreadful unless you're positioned perfectly. John's right, film cameras with rubbish plastic lenses used a curved pressure plate to make up for the lens aberrations. However, ...

Exciting year

I wonder if a new 645 camera might actually have a full 645 sensor rather than a cropped version. The current crop sensor in the 645d&z is 44x33mm which isn't that much larger than the 36x24mm of the K-1. A 'full frame' 645 sensor would be 56x42mm. I'm not sure cramming 100mp into the current sen...

Exciting year

Let me just check my bank balance.... No still can't afford a 645, never mind a new one with an even bigger sensor. Nothing more exciting than that on the horizon? Ah well, I'll stick with the K5ii.

K3ii replacement

No I was forced by the lack of support and no third party support with what I require and if you you are in business you don’t stop making your flagship cropped sensor camera without a new one there to take its place that is known as suicide for any company they proved that they can’t go forward any...

An evolutionary dead end?

Mirrorless isn’t the holy grail so many claim; it is an overcrowded market and Canon have said they are expanding in that field in the face of competition from Sony. I have tried several bodies and found none I would swap from DSLR for, even the Hasselblad viewfinder image is juddery when you pan, a...

An evolutionary dead end?

On the flip side, I do get the appeal of the whatyouseeiswhatyouget nature of mirrorless. On landscapes especially, live view is much more useful than an optical viewfinder. Focussing aids like focus peaking and digital zoom are excellent for manual focus work. Tracking AF across a full sens...

An evolutionary dead end?

With optical displays you see everything right down to specks of dust hairs etc.-- Try cleaning the muck out of the viewfinder :D Last year I bought a new FF Sony & kit lens for just over £600. I have no regrets at all. The kit lens is slow but sharp, the EVF is a bit clunky and the shutter is l...

An evolutionary dead end?

Personally although I pop into look at DPR from time to time I've never felt it true independent journalism under Amazon. The big makes pay a lot of money with loaned stock to get into big cabinets in our few remaining camera stores, at least that is what salesmen tell me. I bet they also pay Amazon...

An evolutionary dead end?

24MP compared to 36MP  Hardly an eye opener  -- If you want to play that game, the Sony a7R II is a 42MP sensor, and the Canon 5Ds is 50.6MP, and the Pentax 645Z is 51.4MP  All cameras have strengths and weaknesses. The A7III has nearly 700 phase-detection AF points across...

An evolutionary dead end?

like it or not video is as important as stills to many users especially pros. I have opted to not replace my pentax gear as it wears out or becomes obsolete. this coming from a guy who was loyal for over 35 years and many cameras over the years. sadly it is too cost prohibitive to run multiple...
