Relative Enlargement Sizes

Being a complete Canadian amature, I get my prints at the pharmacey, and can only relate to 4x6, 5x7, 8x10 inch sizes. I've never had the opportunity to splurge for 16x20. Mac, I hope you crop your photos when printing at those different sizes. Sorry if I'm saying something you're blatantly aware o...

Now, most printing equipment used in North America is either manufactured in Germany or Japan, and conform to the Europeans standards, but old habits are hard to kill. Actually, I think it is more the other way round. If you look a bit more closely on the European offers your in for a surprise. M...

Missing persons report.

Come to think of it, Tim (Ammonyte) hasn't been around for a while either. Tim (Ammonyte) posted earlier in the year saying that he had suffered quite a few problems in the previous months but that he would be back with us posting again but nothing more has been heard.

It's great to see that dirk1000 is back again and has posted in the Gallery. I used to enjoy his photos from Argentina.

Good to have you back Dirk. That is one impressive building you have got there. No wonder you had no time for us. Hopefully now you'll get to enjoy your new studio, and we'll get to enjoy the photos made there.

External Hard Drive recommendations?

A western digital 500 GB form amazon is around £ 53 ( free delivery) which is a good deal. I would also suggest to keep a second back up of any external HDD as the average life of hard disk is very short these days. Vikram

Whatever you do, make some form of back-up, either two hard-drives, or DVDs or something, anything! Hard drives can and do die and although they can sometimes be "recovered" at some expense, not always. We had one which died, in the process of which had scratched the surface of the disk so badly n...

An eSATA socket can easily & cheaply be added to the back of a PC with a spare SATA connection inside. (Most modern PCs use SATA). But it won't necessarily be "plug and play", meaning you might have to reboot your PC and change a BIOS setting to use eSATA - not something worth doing regularly. Th...

Proper backup software like Acronis True Image is good for compressing the backup, or for ensuring absolutely all system & hidden files are included when backing up Windows. But when I don't need any of that, I just copy stuff manually or use XCOPY. I didn't know about the "/clone" switch. Thanks...

For back up software I find Comodo BackUp http://backup.comodo.com/ to be excellent it has a no frills UI but it certainly gets the job done. Easy to set up and best of all it's free :)

PC Security

Use the Windows firewall (or whatever firewall you like) and antivirus software such as AVG, but do not rely on this or anything to prevent your computer from getting infected or to cure it once it is infected. Instead, make regular backups of your operating system with something like Acronis Tru...
