I really enjoyed the flexibility of the 16-50 during my short break in Dorset. Till now I was using the trio of primes when I just was going out. The 16-50 did not disappoint if anything I loved it, focused really quickly - much more quickly that the 50-135 is - and the quality is great.

Still had my 70mm with me but didn't use it.

It is the shame the primes aren't WR lenses... It would make sense for them to be I think as in any case a lot less to go wrong with them in bad weather so it would probably be an easier/cheaper job to do.

In any case I am well covered with the 16-50 and 50-135

Well at least this solves one of the mysteries for me, and that is if the new XS lenses will fit the old fashion DSLRs and it seems the answer to this is yes which in turn means I can sell my 40mm and get the K-01+the 40mm for darn near 400£ without losing my 40mm lens which I really love.

It just makes it that much more likely that I will end up buying a K-01

Also Jules 12-18 month cycles do mean that you don't get to learn the camera well enough but that is only the case if you absolutely have to jump to the new camera which really for most people this isn't the case. I happy had the D40 for 5 years despite the 5-6 models that came after it and only upgraded with the D7k...

Unless the K3 can make my morning coffee and beat up my porridge while it is cooking then I doubt I'd feel any sort of inclination to upgrade to it. I doubt I'd even bother with the one after the K3 either as long as the K-5 is still alive and well anyway.

If you lose the K-mount you are not left with much... Pana and Oly already produce really great m43 cameras, being a third choice in that does not really sound such a good idea.

A more refined K01 on the other side...

I'd go for a s/h 17-70 and a s/h 55-300. It should be only just over your £400 and they both get very good reputations.

You might want to consider for street photography one of the DA limited primes, the 21mm though a bit pricey for your budget it is a great lens for street as is the 40mm (though that one might be a tad long).

OM-D to K-01 isn't really a fair comparison... the K-01 isn't trying to be what the OM-D is, and is significantly cheaper. I'm intrigued by the MFT cameras but I'm not prepared to sacrifice even a little IQ (and DOF) for a smaller body, especially in a £999.99 camera. A cheap Olympus-Pen makes sense though, as an alternative to a quality compact camera.
Yes I totally agree, the K-01 seems to be a K-5 for the uninitiated or the 'photographer stigma' conscious or someone that wants something simpler than a full blown DSLR without having to make sacrifices when it comes to IQ. The OM-D is going the other way, trying to provide a more complete package for more demanding photographers while retaining the advantages of the m4/3 format. Rather unfair comparison.

One of the things I couldn't do without is the front wheel on the K-5. I absolutely love being able to control ISO with the front wheel and Aperture with the back on Av mode! Sooooo convenient.

In your case though some glass is probably a better investment. I really liked the feel of the WR18-55 that came with the K-5 but the IQ left a bit to be desired, you need decent lenses to do justice to the K-5 sensor anyway.

Let alone that some new lenses will open up a few more possibilities while a new body not so much.

OMG OMG OMG!!! the Pentax mirrorless is too thick! keeping the k-mount means you lose the benefits of mirrorless which is thinner smaller cameras!
Says the people that want a camera that fits in their shirt pockets.
Morons forgot they need a lens, though...
The 16mm pancake would barely stick out more than the K01 grip, and makes the Nex cameras very portable. The Nex also acts as a digital back for just about any lens ever made and has a tilting screen, allowing it to be used as a discrete, tlr type camera - that would have been useful on the K01.
Problem is that with the NEX the 16mm is the only pancake you can get - far as I know - and it is neither a very good lens nor a terribly useful focal length.

I have yet to try the DA* 16-50, I bought from here, properly in any way to make any judgement regarding its IQ. However I did try out the 17-70 and despite it being a nice light well constructed lens it does not hold a candle compared to the quality of the 16-50 and that is not before I even realised the fact that the 17-70 ring rotates.

To top that I value the 1 extra mm on the wide end more than I do the 20mm on the long end and the extra stop of brightness is huge. If you can get a s/h one the price difference is a lot smaller than if buying new.

It is a Silver Edition K-5 with a grip, and the 40mm connected. If you look at the picture carefully (there are several of the K-5 40mm pancake combination) you will notice they were made by the K-01 and the DA* 50-135mm telezoom lens (also recognizable by the unsharpness of the focus, unfortunately).
The pictures look ok to me, K-5 level. It also depends on which settings you select to process your photographs and what you do with them afterwards. These look very saturated.
Unsharpness of focus ?
