Hello David,
I think the "portrait" version of the first two doesn't work as well as a squarer crop. Perhaps in the "portrait" photos you were trying to avoid the "tired, hackneyed, cliched" lake district shots
#3 Not sure about the van it looks "out of place", at our club we have been told to try and avoid "unsupported foliage" so perhaps more tree and less van, but again the avoiding "tired etc" remarks apply
#4 Not sure if so much out of focus grey gravestone adds anything.
As a learner I downloaded your first two photo's and cropped them. To me they do look "better" but would only post them here (at the risk of being torpedoed ) with your permission.

...Since digital photography took off (pretty much in parallel with the rise in popularity of the internet) the world has become awash with digital images. So let's not add to the huge and growing mountain of not-especially-good images.
But how are we supposed to find out they are not good pics if no one sees them and pull them to bits hopefully explaining what is wrong and how to put it right?

We were not all blessed with supreme photographic ability in taking and judging as you obviously are therefore we need the guidence of Photography Geniuses such as yourself or give up the hobby. Perhaps the forum should be split in 1. Beginners ie Rubbish, deleted 10 seconds after upload 2.Not especially good, deleted 10 minutes after upload 3 Tired & Cliched, deleted during upload 4 Approved by GL 5. Kit for sale by those who have given up.

Given that there are gadzillions of photos already taken there is probably not much left that isn't a cliche.

If I want to go and photograph oft photographed things then the fact that my photos will be similar to many others before me isn't going to put me off as they will still be my photographs. Furthermore you can still take a better photograph of the same thing than everyone else. The fact that I haven't yet just means I can keep trying.
Absolutely. +1 from me

Thanks Steve. I think I was joking about the Green Mode I do want to learn to use the camera but think my old brain is full of cobwebs. I don't think I've ever used the TAV mode but will certainly be trying it now. I think this is one advantages of being a "pupil" in a great "school" of people always willing to offer advice and answer questions.

Thanks for the comments people:

bassman : I used auto focus and whatever the camera came up with.
EXIF Sub IFD
Exposure Time (1 / Shutter Speed) = 1/125 second ===> 0.008 second
Lens F-Number / F-Stop = 10/1 ===> ƒ/10
Exposure Program = shutter priority (4)
ISO Speed Ratings = 100
EXIF Version = 0221

I'd just taken off the 55-300mm lens and popped on the 105mm and clicked away, butterfly's etc never want to pose for me

Alan : Not tried TVA mode, usually Av mode, played around with Tv but am begining to think P mode or the green oblong mode is my best choice. Haven't really looked at the men on horses yet and my bird photos are ****

Vic : I would say that is a yes to your question unsharpmask 100, 0.5, 0

Next year I'll get some good ones

As my father taught me...there is something beautiful and interesting in everything you see...you just have to look for it.

That is how I view other people's pictures..but I don't need to tell them what and how I saw it.

There is nothing more destructive to my creativity and imagination than to hear a club judge completely miss the point of my picture.
I find judges always find the cliche but totally miss the underlying metaphor, shown plainly by my out of focus, noisy snaps, but Liz and my neighbours think they are great so what the heck, keep on snapping, between zero and infinity the chances of getting a perfect one is in there
