Nobody has mentioned Pentax anoraks...and curiously enough I think I've just stumbled upon a collection of them!

The best thing to do is not rush, slow yourself down and have fun. The night before and in the morning you will be asking yourself why the hell you said you would do this but once you start you will settle down. The Doc' captured some impressive images there. I stood outside in the London area (waiting for the 'clear sky' some dozy bugger on the radio promised us earlier in the day) with a pair of 20x80s (binoculars that is) a 500 lens tacked onto the K30 and a print out of the rock's route/time scale to hand. Zip,zilch and zero...even the moonlight eventually gave up trying to penetrate such effective cloud cover.

Nice captures Roger, but unfortunately the branches are a major distraction as well as a detraction. This whole bird photography thing is a real tester...they're in the right place at the wrong moment when you're not dialled in and un-ready to fire, or in the wrong place at the right moment when you are all spammed up and hot to capture!!
One fine day, however, I'm confident that I'll be spammed up and hot to capture when the damned birds I'm after will also be in the right place at the right moment !

I dialled-in a couple of clics compensation but apparently not enough!

Glad to hear you finally cracked it, Bob!
According to the Japanese Pentax website, you should now notice improved performance over general stability, as well as an improvement in contrast AF.
Now that you've mastered how to update your camera, I'm sure you'll agree that it's a much less daunting task than it appears to be!
Curiously enough there is a noticeable difference...particularly whilst hand holding the 500mm. I noticed it earlier today -3rd- whilst lurking beside the Thames up by Chelsea bridge. I had business in the area and figured I'd take the camera along and stop off on the return journey. It obviously wasn't apparent whilst tracking a couple of birds on the wing, but did feel a tad more stable whilst pinging off a few more hand held shots of various critters on the shore line and sundry other features within the vicinity. And yeah...the next upgrade'll be a lot less daunting indeed.

I use a modestly priced camera bag to hold my K30 with a 500 lens attached, my K10D with a lens attached and my other lenes packed around both. What ensures the safety of my kit is the .357 Magnum I point at anyone who comes near the bag!

Thank you for the advice Steve. I've since managed to crack it, however, and according to the camera I am now apparently updated. This epic struggle with technology means that I'm none the wiser as to what advantages the download provides...but what the hell, it's in the camera so it has to be good for my photography, right? Sounds like the only thing you haven't done (so far) is extract the downloaded .ZIP file. Go to where you d/l'ed it, then double-click this .zip file, and it should extract to give you the .bin file you need for the update. Put this .bin file onto your formatted sd card, then put the card into your camera whilst switched off. I think I'm right in saying that you should simultaneously press the MENU button and switch the camera on at the same time. The critical part is getting the .bin file onto the card, and continue from there. It sounds as though you are on the right track, but you are just trying to load the wrong file type.
