I will happily pay for better IQ, but I resent paying for features that are of no interest to me.

I agree a fully loaded board, with features switched on or off via a firmware upgrade could be an option. Maybe options could be time limited.

But why not go further and design in such a way that The Processing Components, or AF module can be upgraded through service centres.

There is room for some real disruptive innovation in the way the wide range of customers needs are met.

The question is are Ricoh ready or willing to flip the market?

They should build in GPS in as well. Ridiculous given mobile phones have, it's not as if the technology is expensive.
I wrote a big post on this last night and microsoft IE threw it all away

My £50 Android phone has wifi, gps and bluetooth built in, plus 3G data capability I guess also. Seriously, wifi and gps should be in any flagship model.

Got me thinking about a quote:
Yesterday’s Excellence is Today’s Standard and Tomorrow’s Mediocrity
Pentax needs to be building this stuff in first, rather than catching up to the others. Being at the front of the wave rather than coming along in the wash behind it.

Likewise with the Megapixel increase. Cell phones have higher MP counts than DSLR's these days, so we shouldn't be surprised with a jump to 20MP. It's a lot from the traditional options, but it's still nothing outrageous when you look at what's on offer across the market.

What I am really impressed with though is the rate of new and refreshed products coming to the market. There seems to be a real buzz within the company and the name is starting to be heard within the industry/popular magazines again etc.

It's cropped up on many threads, but there are really good ingredients available, so it's time to create a dish that's truly incredible again.

I don't need video, I don't care about wifi, I just want a really good camera that can also give me high ISO performance....
Video is an extension of what's already there, so it doesn't have to be a development funds wasted elsewhere scenario. gps and wifi are cheap and easy to implement, just ask a basic budget cellphone these days.
I can see why wifi, GPS and video appeal to some, but to me they have no appeal. To me this is where the KL fits in, not so much retro but stripped back.
Ideally I would like to see a modular camera, whereby a buyer could add the features they want around the same chassis and sensor. Since that approach does not seem to be on the horizon, I would like to see two versions of the 'best IQ camera in the range.

1. all singing dancing, with every gadget going including midi port
2. a stripped down camera, which includes all the still picture taking features we desire.

Hi Jules, thanks for the information. Are there any details on the 20Mp sensor? It will be interesting to see how dynamic range and high ISO noise stack up against the K3 sensor.

morning, any ideas peeps? getting camera ready for eBay this morning and I removed the screen protector to do a check of screen(which is mint scratch free) then turned camera on to find this..

it is the screen only, this does not come out on photos..

in sight of this quite happy to drop to £410 for a quick sale, or £510 for everything that remains(camera, 18-50 and flash)
Looks like either dead or stuck pixels on the screen. If it is stuck pixels, they may well recover with a little exercise. Try running a slideshow on loop for a while. I have had some success with phone and laptop displays using a similar method.

I know people have been clamouring for this for ages now, I wonder what makes it the holy grail? The f1.7 converter seems to do a very good job with the right lenses. Will this be a significant improvement on that? WR is obviously welcome.
The 1.7 AF Adapter dates back to the late 80's and was officially discontinued many years ago. It did seem that 'old new stock' entered the market via Japanese sellers a couple of years ago, but it has not been generally new available for many years. So this represents the first real opportunity for many to buy a new Pentax branded teleconverter
The 1.7 AF adapter was an hybrid, in that it was designed to provide AF functionality to non AF lenses as well as being a teleconverter. There may have been compromises made in the design because of that. So together with general advances in design the 1.4 may be better optically.

For many the ability to pass through lens information will justify the purchase. No more manual input of focal length for SR and no more compromise setting when it is being used with a zoom, although I agree with earlier comments that it will be at its best with prime lenses.

As an aside and slightly off topic I wonder if the optics were 'borrowed' from the back end off the DA 560mm. I always thought that 560mm was an odd focal length, but it has some logic if you take a 400mm design and add a 1.4 convertor to the back end. Maybe wishful thinking, but does it mean that Pentax have a 400mm F4 design somewhere under wraps?

I hope they start work on a 300mm 2.8 to go with this converter....
I make that a 32mm larger max aperture than the existing 300mm F4. Thaa's a very big and heavy lens.
Pentax made an FA 300mm F2.8 until 2004 and before that a 'A' series. The FA weighed in at approx. 2.5ks , the 'A' series was a tad under 3kg.

Matt (Mattmatic) created a post before Christmas on this topic, entitled Secondary battery for MX-1 link

I purchased a battery from the eBay seller linked in the thread. It arrived within 2 days and I found it to fit correctly and perform at least as well the original. The link is still live and the price is £5.78 delivered

still not sure how you would actually introduce an image with the pixels in a recangular format onto a new blank document? Oh well, have to keep ploughing through the Photoshop book!
Open the existing 'square' document
Crop or select all
Copy
Open a new document, with the aspect ratio you want
Paste special into new document.

Once again this provides only a preview. You can save with the aspect ratio settings, but outside of Photoshop the image is viewed in its original form.

Hi Judith, Lightroom 5.3 does support Pentax K3 PEF files, earlier versions do not.

Regarding Image Size - that was where I was getting confused, because there is no 'Pixel Aspect Ratio' setting there - are you saying that if the pixel aspect ratio had been changed previously as you described through the View menu, that unticking 'constrain proportions' would in fact produce a file with pixels in the new ratio?
No, the pixel aspect ratio setting from the view menu should be considered as just a custom view for that image.

My understanding is this

I have an image in a 4:3 ratio
I want to see what it might look like if it is displayed in 16:9
I set the appropriate ratio via the view menu and decide if I like it or not.

There are no specific aspect ratio presets in CS6 image resize dialogue.

By way of an example

A K5 image comes out at 4928 * 3264 pixels.
If I resize the width to 1920 I get a height of 1272, so I can either crop 252 pixels from the height dimension and maintain the original proportionality. I can create a custom 1920*1080 preset for the crop tool, which will help a lot with this or

I can untick the constrain proportions dialogue and enter 1920/1080, which in this case will give me a squashed looking image.

The pixel aspect ratio on the view menu in effect provides a preview of this without actually changing the file itself. So in this case you can open a standard K5 file go to the view menu, select pixel aspect menu and use any of the presets or create your own custom ratios.

This is a useful feature if your image is going to be displayed on a number of fixed aspect displays. It allows the user to quickly toggle through the ratios.
