I purchased an MX-1 as a Christmas present for my wife. She has never had any problems with useability, but she did manage to scratch the screen, before the glass protector I ordered arrived. I tried to polish out the scratches but instead rubbed away the anti reflective coating. I paid heavily for that mistake as a new screen with fitting tape set me back 45 pounds from Johnson's. It's a simple job, which I did myself, I shudder to think, what the fitted price would have been. The glass protector was fitted before I returned the camera back to my wife.

Many thanks for the information guys. We are really looking forward to exploring a part of the country that is more or less unknown to us.

My wife and I will be vacationing in the South East of the country for the first time, for 6 days over the Bank holiday period. We will be based just outside of Arundel.

Can anyone recommend places to visit with good photo opportunities? We have never been to the area before, so I don't mind clichéd subjects. I should also mention that we are National Trust members, which will no doubt come in useful if the weather is unkind.

If you have an old Pentax AF film body, give the lens a good exercise using that. Point the lens up and down while focusing, let gravity help to overcome 'stiction' problems. Finally make sure that you have a freshly charged battery in your DSLR, when you try to wake it up.

Replacing seals is certainly not difficult, but care needs to be taken to avoid degraded rubber getting onto the focusing screen.

Not a problem with the 'Super/Program A' cameras as the focusing screen
can be removed.
Hi Steve, I'm pretty certain the Super-A screen is not user replaceable - I have a memory that it might have been replaceable by Pentax - although I don't know if there were other types of screen as options.

John.
John, the screen on the Super A, Program A and I believe also the MEF and MG is fixed by adhesive to a metal frame. The screen/frame is held in place by a two small screws to be found above the mirror damper. Once removed the retaining frame drops, much like a modern Pentax DSLR and the screen and its frame can be carefully removed. There are two further adjustment screws on the screen/frame assembly, which I believe are set during manufacture.

As far as I know Pentax never specifically mentioned this feature and never marketed alternative screens.
