Not really, just came across it and thought it may well be worth seeing how it goes - they promise something different from the "usual" photography magazines so time will tell.

I'm going to stick with the comment though, because I did actually own the Fuji S602 Pro, then the S7000 and finally the S9600. Of these three the S7000 was excellent.

The S9600 was nowhere near as good and actually quite disappointing.

I can only report what I find.
Fair enough John, I'm not going to argue with experience, I've see some great shots from them though :

Getting back to the OP, the Fiji 9600 is actually not that good in terms of image quality.
Hi John,

I'm not sure this comment is exactly fair, the 9600 & its predecessor the 9500 were highly thought of "prosumer" models as mentioned here in a couple of reviews, I nearly bought one myself after much research...

The lenses that these cameras had often outperform the standard kit lenses supplied with DSLRs (not sure about the WR though) which has resulted in initial disappointment for quite a few owners moving on to DSLRs - me included until I upgraded to the Sigma 17-70. I'm not saying this is the case here but it's certainly worth considering.

Just been browsing a bit of photography stuff & came across a new venture by Tim Parkin & Joe Cornish. They've started an online landscape photography magazine, here's a link

Bret and Simon what I for example meant is ETTR (expose to the right) that's one technique to maximize data.
Basically you deliberately over-expose your photo because more data is captured by the sensor in the lighter area than dark areas, because you overexpose, the camera output is not close to the output you had in mind you need to do PP to get the photo right.

little read http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/expose-right.shtml
Aah, ok then Steffan I see what you mean....my answer's now "sometimes" -rather than shoot to the right all the time to maximise detail sometimes I deliberately underexpose as I'm not always interested in all the detail available in the scene, just a particular element. I'm not a massive PP fan so I aim to minimise how much I need to do, sometimes I need to use the ETTR technique for this and sometime I don't.

Reading back what I've just written it probably doesn't make sense but I know what I mean

I suppose as I always shoot Raw it's a little of both..I try to capture the shot as I'd like the final image to appear (best lighting etc) but inevitably with Raw always do a little tweaking to get that final image.

I'm not sure if it's 100% relevant to your situation but when I moved to DSLR (K10D) a few years ago I was also initially disappointed compared to the results of my then "prosumer" (Konica Minolta A200). I also bought it with the kit lens but after a quick upgrade to the Sigma 17-70 IQ was pretty much transformed - contrast/colour & sharpness were all noticeably better than the kit lens. Not being familiar with the WR version I can't be sure if this is the case but it's possible you have a poor copy?

As others have said too though there's a pretty steep learning curve when moving to DSLR and it's possible you may just need a bit more time perfecting things, give it a bit more time but if things don't improve perhaps try & borrow an alternative lens to test things out

I've had a read through it, some useful info but its stretching things to call it a review it's more of a Pentax advert

Worthwhile read if not your scene.

Best regards
Thanks for posting the link, always interesting to read someones take on things - even if I don't really agree, at least not with the info on colour space output. Most printers here in the UK, or the ones I use at least, request Srgb so not converting to that for print output is asking for trouble.

Some nicely composed photos on the site too although saturation levels are a bit high for my tastes.

Just my thoughts

Nice shots Simon

I used to live near Mold, it's a longer treck to Snowdonia than many think, you still need to be up early to arrive for shots like yours

I was up Mynyyd Mawr on NOvember 3rd this year - the camera stayed tucked away all day as the weather was a little damp to say the least

Stu
Thanks for the comment Stu...yes unfortunately Mold isn't as close as I'd like to Snowdonia especially in summer when sunrise is way too early

The weather hasn't been great at all in North Wales this year for photography or anything else, I've hardly taken a photo myself. I have found that winter is usually much more productive, most of my photos over the last couple of years or so seem to have been taken then
