Hi All,
I've just joined the world of Pentax with the purchase of a K20d. The current price drop & cashback offer was too good to pass up. I was intending to wait til after xmas to jump into a dslr & was in the process of confusing myself with reviews, tests, opinions & conjecture on all the various models from all the manufacturers, but as the K20d was selling out fast I thought I better check one out whilst I could find one.
My local pentax pro centre had one in stock & were willing to pricematch Jessops website so I found myself walking out with one. I checked out the competition & the only other one with a quality feel was the D300, but I'm an exposure lock and centre focus spot kinda guy so paying around double the price for a complicated metering system & 50 focus points I'll never use was out of the question. I was really surprised by the build quality & functionality of the Pentax (pleasantly I might add).
No money for new glass til mid Jan, so I'm just gonna go out and shoot to see what lenses I think I need to pursue further.
For now I just have the kit lense & waiting for some ebay fodder to turn up. Snapped up a few fast(ish) manual primes (28mm f2.8, 50mm f1.7, 50mm f2 & 135 f2.8 & some extension tubes) This lot should keep me occupied til I can afford some new glass to play with.
It will also help me see if I can live with primes vs zooms - I certainly hope so, those limited lenses look very nice indeed.
Manual focusing & stop down metering will do me good as I explore the k20d I think. No rush to take the shot then so can put more time into composition & getting the tech bits right (dof, shutter speed, etc.)
Will benefit my skill & the end result I think. The temptation to go out and point & shoot your new camera at anything & everything just results in a hard drive full of mediocre images at best.
I have had a few problems getting the focus spot on with the 50mm f1.7 I bought, especially at wider apertures, so have ordered a split prism focusing screen to aid me, I'll let you all know how I get on.
Thanks for reading my mini life story & I'll see you all soon with some questions no doubt.
Like you I've just bought a K20D, and entered the world of Pentax DSLR.
Welcome to the Forum

I've been looking at my old kit today, and guess what, I've found that my old Pentax Remote Control D works with my K20D!
It works from the front of the camera and the rear, so what is it's range ?
What are the advantages of the Pentax Remote Control F,(as shown in the K20D manual) over the Remote Control D?
Any one know if the Pentax Remote Control E Zoom functions work with the K20D?

Well we finally did it and two new K20D cameras with the 18-55mm II lenses arrived this afternoon from SRS.
There are a few minor improvements over the K10D in the way of catches and small design tweaks, but of course it is basically the same beast.
Now one of our K10D cameras will be used for eBay images and the like and this means that soon the other Pentax K10D with MkI 18-55mm lens will be available and also a Fuji S9600.
You can't really complain about the curent Pentax prices. Fantastic value.

My partner has bought (after some gentle persuasion) the K-m (from Gales cameras in Woodford- very helpful, I have no connection). A nice camera, small and light and does the business. She was going to buy in our local Jessops- it's in their new catalogue and on their website. But Pentax tells me that they are definitely not supplying Jessops with the model. And a chap in Cameraworld told me that Jessops will not be selling any more Pentax product. After a quick look in a branch yesterday he could well be right- not a single Pentax model on display.
So....why? And isn't this bound to be detrimental to Pentax?
It's a shame that Photo Optix has gone to the wall, and it would appear that Larry Morgan, at Brentwood Essex never see a Pentax rep any more, according to Neil the owner!
I am left wondering, if it is a turn over issue, and if Pentax feel that their products are not selling in sufficient quantities?

I got carried away with my excursion to Park Cameras, and forgot I had crossed into Sussex.
Thanks for pointing this out.

But can we all please keep the discussions pleasant, and not start calling each other names.
After all we live in a democratic society, and we are all entitled to our opinions.

I was one of the few keen souls yesterday to brave the elements and went to the Autumn Airshow at Duxford yesterday, apart from being wet it was very cold thankfully the DA*300 is weatherproofed...
Credit also to the pilots who managed to put on a display despite the weather.

Some CR-3V batteries are over-volted as well - Pentax won't be keen on their use.
NiMH or lithium AA batteries should be good in the camera.
As it is basically 2 AA size lithium batteries combined together, I fail to see the differences, being quoted here on this site!
Until recently the only place I could get AA litium cells for my daughter's E10 was Maplin, and when you're out of the country these are hard to obtain!
If you use AA alkaline cells they are flat after only a few shots, and Pentax don't advise them for any thing other than initial settings of the new camera!
