I like these a lot Gareth, foggy days are a photographer's treat.

Review correction - the 18-55WR kit lens is weatherproof. Have other reviews found a problem with CA? Looks like the reviewer was looking for reasons NOT to switch from Canikon. Cannot recall anything but high praise for the K-1 image quality, at least one saying it is possibly the best landscape dslr available today.

I have occasionally got a little chromatic abherration where you would most expect it, high contrast against a bright white sky for example with the DFA 150-450 lens. However one click in Lightroom removes it with no noticeable loss of picture quality. As with noise reduction in Lightroom I have found that the RAW images from the K-1 respond much better than those from my K-50.

Compositionally these are excellent, and what a good idea to review the year. Maybe print a book each time?

The red flash does not indicate correct focus, just the point being focused on. The green hexagon at the bottom of the frame should be steady, not flashing, which indicates focus has been achieved.
I should have said the red flash from the focus frame which coincides with the green hexagon and bleep. As I no longer have the eyes of a twenty year-old I use the focus assist in manual mode as well.

I echo that Paolo, and especially the low light performance. If you compare the weight and handling with equivalent FF bodies from other manufacturers I think you will find the K-1 feels better, and you have the other body if you need a lightweight for casual walk-around opportunities. I have attached the Peak system so I can unclip and change the standard strap to a Peak strap when I have a heavy lens like the 150-450mm attached, with the strap clipped to both the camera body and the lens. I also use a messenger style bag for the camera rather than have it around my neck all the time, and it is less vulnerable to accidental knocks as well.

Did you get the autofocus indicator in the viewfinder? The other day with a temperature around zero the focus squares in the K-1 came on but no red flash, and pictures were not sharp. I thought I was too close so moved back, tried three different lenses but got the same result. Back home everything worked fine so as the battery indicator was getting low I wondered if that was the factor given the low temperature.

John is right for panning shots, as SR is counterproductive then. When I had the Sigma 150-500 I would for static shots dial in the length I would most likely use which was generally 450mm; I used a preset for this lens but cannot remember if the length was recorded as well so worth a try. Results were good.

I'm not sure "UK based site". What is? This forum? Wondering why so many "foreigners" were on this site.

The authorized Pentax repair site, Precision comes poorly regarded. They repair other brands also. Pentax USA is not popular over here like in Europe/Asia due to poor marketing, it's a Canon/Nikon world over here with Canon the current leader.

I did wait awhile before purchasing the K1 as I remember the K3 fiasco with it's major recall. When ever a new product is rushed to market, you can expect problems. I've read Pentax took 10 years to develop the K1, not sure if true.

cheers
Whilst the forum is based in the UK it is international, and you will see we have many contributors from all over the world which brings a great mix of opinions and images. In the UK we are lucky to have a few excellent Pentax retailers, and there is a dedicated shop in Paris. I sense that Pentax have upped their marketing here since launching the K-1 but customer service needs to come up to speed as well, and I would have thought that a commercially focused outfit like Ricoh would have the resources to sort this. As for 10 years development of the K-1, take that with a pinch of salt. I think a full frame body was put on hold whilst Ricoh/Pentax concentrated on their medium format range, but I gather that the K-1 has much of the 645 DNA as a result.

This is a US based company and their own link to the K30/K50 aperture block repair site doesn't work; a bit amateurish looking. The only other links that come up on google are to forum discussions like this one. Question is, has anyone had the repair done, and how was it?
