Hi Rob,
Can't tell about silkypix - I'm not using it, but recently I started using irfan view (plus plugins to support RAW). It has a smart, simple browser, where you can see thumbnails and can quickly open pic to examine it in details, arrow keys to jump to the next/previous one, and del + enter keys to delete, works quite efficiently for me to do a first sorting/deleting .
I'll have a look at this one. As I took so many I'm after a quick way to look at the images in good quality, I normally convert my images to DNG then use Elements and full screen to view them but as I say I've taken loads and it would take a while.
The Delete Selected Scene function in Silkypix will definitely delete the image from your card/harddisk. However, if deleting from the harddisk, the file will still be in the Recycler Bin.
In my opinion, Silkypix may be a very good editor for RAW, but it is not the ideal tool for sorting your images. Here I find the Organizer in Photoshop Elements much easier to use.
But of course you first transfer your images from the card to the harddisk, then make a backup to another disk before deleting anything?

For the first time I used the .PEF format and have just opened the files with Silkypix and I'm now in the process of sorting out the good from the bad. Is it possible to delete images from Silkypix and will they be deleted from the hard drive as well? I was going to convert them into DNG but there's too many and it will take ages...
I've also been looking at another RAW converter Capture One. Is this any good?

Generally speaking, any image stabilisation system should be switched off if you are photograping a moving subject.
SR/IS/VR and all the other names for it, are there to counteract camera movement, and can do nothing to stop subject movement.
There are some systems that claim to be able to detect the panning motion and therefore only counteract the up/down/forward/backward movement (eg Nikon's in lens VR system has two modes, active and normal) but I can't say I've noticed much of a difference between them.
Practice panning and get your shutter speed as high as possible!
I would still consider using SR when using a slower shutter speed such as 1/350 or 1/125 for prop blur for example.

I hadn't thought of this - has anyone else got any opinions as to whether this advice should be followed?

I haven't used PEF before but I may give it a try especially as there is no loss in quality during the conversion process, I've already got the DNG converter installed on the PC.

But if you have Elements, why bother with anything else? Just import your images directly into the Organizer and sort them there. There is no need to convert to DNG first.
