After some posts last year I'm now convinced the issue does not lie with the SDM Motor in these lenses. I strongly suspect it points to a capacitor (or capacitors) on the circuit board, which need to be charged in order for the motor to operate. If the lenses are left unused for periods of time, the caps lose charge and won't re-charge when fixed to the camera. We've seen loads of posts from people who use their SDM lenses regularly and don't have issues, whereas people who use them sparingly do.

I wish Pentax would come clean and tell us all what causes the problems and how to avoid them. My 50-135 will not work when first fixed to the camera, but after 30 seconds or so it does start working 100% normally, then I have no further issues. This lens has the latest motor.

David
There may be some mileage in this. I've got a 16-50 DA* purchased in 2011. A year or so back I thought it had died on me, but after being on the body a short time it sprang into life. Each time I've used it since then, I put it on the camera and wait a little while (not more than a minute, generally) and the lens is good to go. I know it's only one example, but to me it does suggest that the issues people have had may not all be drive related.

I'd have to pretty much echo what Womble has said. I did try the rented version but soon reverted to the disc based V.4. If I've got stuck I've been able to call on a friend who has been using the software for some time - but It has only been necessary a couple of times.

Cheers John, your post made me look in a different direction! The scanner did come with some software but I wasn't given the disc. Having asked the question, said disc was produced. I'm now able to scan negatives and have them converted at the touch of a button!

Images are okay "as is" for web use, but any I see that might be worth working on will be taken into the office and put through LR!

Thanks everyone for your ideas and responses.

Thanks for the responses so far guys - it *is* going to be a task and a half.

I've got the 35mm slides covered - I've convinced SWMBO that she should view them all first and whittle out any that she does not want, which will save me a lot of time and might give her an inkling of how long it'll take.

My problem is turning the film negatives into positives - what do people use?

2nd posting, the first seems to have been swallowed up!

Anyway - SWMBO has tasked me with undertaking this exercise... has anyone done such before? If you did, what software did you use to turn the scanned negative into a positive for working on in LR etc?

There are also in excess of 3000 35mm slides to scan, but that'll be much more straightforward. I hope.

I'd be up for joining in, subject to other commitments not clashing.

I purchased one of my cameras in the far east whilst out there. When back in the UK sent it to Pentax (Slough) via Jessops for a warranty clean (apparently I was entitled to it). The camera came back with no question about country of origin. It seems as long as you buy from an authorised source, the warranty works worldwide.

A filthy sky, distant rain and interesting shafts of light. Add in a rainbow perhaps, some decent scenery and a WR camera & lens.

Job's a good 'un!

Not a recommendation for kit as such (I don't think they stock Pentax) but for sensor cleaning. If you are in East London/Essex/Kent T&B photographic in Romford offer the service for £30 APS-C. The lady was apologising for not being able to offer the usual "same day" service but I could collect tomorrow! Have put the camera through some long exposures - no more specs or splodges.
