You could also use the internal flash to trigger an optical slave trigger on the hot shoe between the 283 and the bracket.

When I spoke with a Pentax staff member at a Photo fair held in Southampton last summer, his words were very clear - do not use anything like a 283 on the camera, always slave it as the voltage on the trigger can damage the electronics. His words, the K10D is good for 12 to 20V and not the high voltages (e.g. 200V) seen on older flashes.

Well worth getting - has more text and simple explanations on key features. Once learnt then it makes using a K10D much easier and intuitive.

What is the link for the Dutch site, have they tested/measured a Vivitar 283? Pentax told me not to put a 283 on my K10D, its too dangerous.

They mentioned a figure sub 20V, but said that its better to be in single digits. I will find some batteries and stick a digital volt meter across the contacts and see what I get.

That mirrors an interesting discussion I had with Pentax last summer, prior to buying a K10D, re the compatibility of all my equipment and while lens etc were all fine the one thing I was told was,

"do not directly connect my Vivitar 283 to the hot shoe adaptor or any flash connector"

it will destroy the camera.

I have a full 283 kit (use it on my old KM) with grip, bracket, filters etc and would dearly love to use it with my K10D but I am almost resigned to getting an AF540.
