Vivitar 283 & K10D? Easiest usage?

I know little about flash photography, but have an early 90's version of the Vivitar 283 which I'd like to fool around with without blowing out my new K10D due to its(likely)high voltage. What's the easiest way to do something with it? If I were to put it on a bracket on the camera could I then just use it as a slave with some triggering device in the hot shoe? I mean some kind of wireless one I'd imagine. (Again to avoid the sizzle and sobbing.)

Okay, by "easiest" in the title I meant "simplest" and by simplest "dumbest." ( I may not be a smart man, but I know what love is.)

I bought the £16 wireless kit from the shop on this web site and it works very well. I had a fight to make it work without using the supplied PC cable but it seems to be a matter of using the locking mechanism.

If you ever want to sell the 283 think of me. I have my daughters scouring the car boot sales for them.

You really want to try and get the accessory that lets you manually adjust the power output as that gives you excellent control of a powerful flash gun.

Oh no you can't

The internal pop up flash only does P-TTL... consequently the slaved flash will trigger on the preflash and have nothing for the main flash
Only if you get a "digital aware" slave cube that has a selectable ignore flash option
