The classic light source for artists is the North facing window, which is said to give the most pleasing light to paint by. Studios with a large window usually have it North facing. This extends to photography very well and gives flattering portrait light.
Just a small addition, another reason north light is liked in photography studios is because it's constant. Ie unlike east/south/west, the sun doesn't change angle with respect to it. Ie it's not full shade on minute, bright the next - it's always shade

Hello,

First images post - be nice

Story: wife bought me a k-7 3 weeks ago just before holiday down in Cornwall. I havent touched a camera in 10 years and new to digital... was a steep learning curve

(IR setting on monochrome with fill in flash, I liked that the underside of the stone is lighter than the sky))

Could anyone shed any light on the ugly fringe? Is that my sloppy technique, something I can kill with photoshop or just an avoidable side result of digital? These are the fringes on the stone at full size:

Ok... just to provide "closure" to this thread-

The card in question was a "Transcend" Class 6 16GB SDHC card, I took it back and they swapped it over for another, and gave me a nice discount on a spare. It's the main line they carry and they've not had any other issues with them... just a bum card I guess (hope!).

Many thanks to London camera Exchange for being so cool about it

re: 2 - The CMS one looks nicer and as it's a CMS it'll be easy for you to update, enlarge etc. But CMS isn't great for SEO - and in the source I can see lots of structural SEO weaknesses in there. Your CSS for the anchors is way too light which leads to a counterintuitive and counterproductive process flow. At least you've got testimonials (a good thing) but perhaps you should have more emphasis on people contacting you on every page, ie an include of some sort. Also special offers, you need some of those. White on dark is generally frowned upon (see Ogilvy's seminal work on advertising), have you tried printing it or is a print style defined?

Version 1 is ok, a bit more bland but b2b and leadgen sites are generally better bland. The content is a bit thin - long always always always gets better conversion rates. The SEO on v1 is basically a total disaster because it's all pulled in via js (wordpress?). Also I really dislike the anchor css inconsistency - it disassembles the unified UI & user experience - but I guess that's just me being geeky.

Bottom line both of them have a fair way to go in terms of generating business, and if it's a new site (I didn't whois it) then you won't get SERPs for a long time. My suggestion would be go with #2, get some of those SEO plugins on there, then do lots and lots of split testing to see what gets you more business. You'd want to go with #2 because it'll be easier for you to change and therefore you can do that split testing (note this is a vital component of website development). Forget about pretty or the opinions of Jo Schmo, what counts is business generation if you want food on the table next month . Google do a free split testing tool - I also notice you havent signed up to any analytics (although the CMS probably says it does that for you, haha) - sign up to google webmaster tool or statcounter.

I'm a web pro, I could write a whole thesis about both of these - bore you till the cows come home - but I'll spare the world my yadda yadda

I would look at My Memory or 7 Day Shop for SD cards. They will be a lot cheaper than a camera shop.
Damm - a LOT cheaper!

I have a lot to learn.

Thanks

What speed is the card? It may be a write speed issue, the camera may be trying to send data to the card faster than the card can record it. I would want to be using a Class 6 card with the K7 to be on the safe side. ( or at least Class4)
Hmmm... no clue - and it's at home: I'll look it up when I get back from work. It was the card that "London Camera Exchange" recommended when I got it (top guys btw) - some 16 Gig thing costing £75 or so... As I said I'm totally clueless about digital so didn't even know there were classes of SD cards

yeah - sadly it only does this intermittedly though so I can't replicate it . I know it's something to do with fiddling between the modes and changing the saving format... maybe it's just me being a muppet

Sounds like a faulty card to me. Have you got another you can try?
Thanks Greynolds999 - No I don't have another, but buying a spare tomorrow at the same shop. I'll take this one in and explain what's happening

Hello,

New to this forum and to dSLRs. Have had a K-7 for 1 week now, and I've had to reformat the 16 Gig SD card 3 times already because it ends up at "cannot display image". Is this usual, or should I take the card back to the shop and have a whine at them to get another? =)

Many thanks
