Am I the only person who considers camera equipment to be generally something you buy and use until it becomes unusable?

Without exception I regret selling every passable quality lens I have ever sold, so I don't sell lenses anymore unless they are duplicates of something I already have or no use to me.

nah, looks horribly soft to me, I'd say it's not even worth taking to the skip.....As I'm such a generous person I'll take it for you if you like?

I use RawTherapee for general work, and UFRAW for Astro because it has dark frame subtraction capability in RAW so I can turn off the noise reduction in camera and take my own dark frames.

The interface on RawTherapee is nicer by a long way though, and the new version looks sweet as.

I've got an 80-320 and my Dad has a DA55-300. The DA is better in every way provided you don't need full frame coverage.

In fact the DA is so good that in real world use it often takes a better photo than my Tamron 300 F2.8 prime. The prime is the better lens, but it's sheer size and weight make it hard to handle where the Pentax is light and agile.

I agree with the above, and would add that if you don't already have a 50mm prime then the Petri might be a nice introduction to prime lens photography.

Also if you match it to a reversing ring it will give you a very cheap and relatively high quality introduction to macro photography.

you might not need either of these things, but if you are interested in both it would be £10 well spent.

both shots look fine to me but of course it's difficult to judge at this size.

Presumably these guys are moving at some speed, in that case if you want to freeze the action (as opposed to showing speed through controled motion blur) I'd boost the ISO to 200 or even 400 and try and get the shutter speed up around 1/1000th.

The 50 1.4 has been discontinued at least 4 times that I can remember. The recent high prices have hurt its appeal, but I'll be surprised if we've seen the last of this old faithful.

As an aside it never ceases to amaze me how people actually want to do weddings with the associated stress.

I second that! I've done one, and I'll only be doing any more if a similar situation arises (ie a close friend or relative simply can't afford a professional so anything I produce is automatically better than what they would have had).

The looks on the faces of the happy couple when they first see the album are priceless, but of course you only get that if the album is good!

ahh, yes, you're right I totally miss read your last post!

the 50 macro does have a long focus throw as Don pointed out so you may find it annoying but it is wonderfully sharp edge to edge with almost no distortion.
