Hi Karl

I tried both UFRaw and RAWTherapee and purely on user interface I found Rawtherapee the easier of the two to use.

I use RawTherapee for general work, and UFRAW for Astro because it has dark frame subtraction capability in RAW so I can turn off the noise reduction in camera and take my own dark frames.

The interface on RawTherapee is nicer by a long way though, and the new version looks sweet as.
you don't have to be mad to post here

but it does help

Thanks very much for the replies, I'll check those out.

One question, will the Lightroom beta cease to function after it's free availability expires?

Probably. I think it will work until the end of June '10.

Lightroom is an excellent total workflow package. I rarely use Photoshop now since using Lightroom.

I use RawTherapee also. I've yet to download the new alpha version. Does it seem stable yet?

I used to use Raw Therapee as well but had major issues with it crashing after being updated to version 2.4 (I think).

The version of RT that crashed under Windoze was 2.4.1. Rawtherapee V2.4 works fine here. Actually, 2.4.1 also works fine if you pinch a DLL from 2.4 (it's documented in the RT forum).

I find Helicon Filter a nice package, currently HeliconSoft are offering version 4.93.2 of their package as a free download link no strings attached (fully functioning).

You can also try a the Beta release of their new version 5 package, both include a RAW converter

another happy RT user here, version 2.4

the new version looks good but it's on test at the moment, ie there isn't a fully-tested production release yet. On my system (ubuntu linux 9.10) the test version looks good but it crashes sometimes.

I've also got UFRAW but RT has more functionality for my use. I like the fact that you can save all of your current settings (eg saturation, noise reduction etc) into a profile (ie a template) and load this template for subsequent RAW images. So you could have a low ISO Pentax template and a high ISO template etc.
Absinthe makes the heart grow fonder.
