My attempts went straight in the trash bin! As has been said, giving the settings etc was an excellent idea. This may help with my next attempts!
Best moon shot I have seen in a while.

Newest camera to be tested:
Dropped my K3 onto the tarmac. Embarrassed or what - Granddad nodded off whilst sitting in the sunshine and the camera fell off my lap. It has an excellent Optech strap attached, but as already noted, the strap needs to be around one's neck in order to work effectively.

Damage, two or three very small pinhead paint chips on the top of the pentaprism housing and the popup flash has a 1/4 inch split in the thin plastic cover. Despite all that everything is still working fine.

"Gura Gear President, Gregory Schern stated, “this acquisition represents an exciting opportunity for Gura Gear to build upon a brand with a legacy of designing solutions for photographers and a dedicated customer following while leveraging worldwide distribution. We look forward to providing customers a high level of service and implementing solutions from a new perspective in a rapidly evolving industry.”"

Looking at the current Range of Gura Gear, I would suggest that the acquisition of Tamrac should give them a few pointers on how to produce a more rugged and better padded innovative carrying solutions!

Afternoon all,

I have recently posted a 'wanted' topic for a 50-500mm Sigma HSM lens.
This lens of course is fairly rare in 'used' form and this may be a good indication as nobody is prepared to lose it from their setup.

My budget is fairly limited (max. 450-500) and this also makes things slightly difficult.

I have been investigating alternatives in this range and have reasonable options available within budget which include, DA 300mm, Sigma APO 120-400 mm f/4.5-5.6 OS HSM, Sigma APO DG 170-500mm F/5-6.3, Sigma 150-500mm f/5.0-6.3 APO HSM DG and of the non-HSM 50-500mm Bigma.

I am going on safari in Africa in July, so will be mainly concentrating on wildlife photography and I also would like to spend more time capturing bird life back here in the UK.

Does anyone have any opinions or recommendations either through personal experience or advice from others?

I understand the DA 300mm is probably the sharpest lens of the above group but my only concern is the lack of flexibility in terms of range.

I have also been tempted by the TC option which I could pair with the Tamron 18-250mm lens that I carry when traveling. Once again though, my concern is that I am going to lose out on image quality by using the TC.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. As you can tell, I am wanting to try and get it right first time round.

Many thanks,
Matt
From experience of two safaris to Kenya, I would opt for a 300mm. As has been mentioned, if you are in a vehicle, you will be quite close to game and a longer lens, not withstanding the weight etc, will mostly be redundant. If you were to invest in the DA*300 coupled with a weatherproof body, dust would not be too much of an issue. Just make sure you take precautions against dust when changing lenses.

A good beanbag is also worth it (or a rolled up jacket) as tripods can be a pain!

Hope this helps

That's really good...much better than I could have done. Initially, reading your sentence John, I thought it was your daughter that had painted a picture of your venerable old Pentax 'Paul Jones'...well each to their own and all that..then i re-read it and realised what you meant..well it is getting a bit late..

No, but it is really arty.

Had to read it a couple of times as well.............it's also late!
