I also use the 50mm 1.7 M quite often (all the time actually), it's a fantastic lens. I know how difficult it can be to get shots in the moment as you have to focus quickly and get your settings correct at the same time. But you've done a very good job here.

Peter, the dark in the background is a pathway in shadow from the surrounding trees. It was about mid-afternoon, around 3pm, so the light was pretty good, but with the dandelion being so white, and the primary focus of the image, all of the light went to the dandelion. It wasn't that dark at all, as you can see in the final two shots of the pathway.
