It can be used on any Pentax camera, film or digital.
I'd like to see it on the front of a "Q"

Modern flashes like the AF540FGZ have an extra electrical contact on their shoe which shorts to the metalwork of the unmodified Hot Shoe Grip (HSG) causing it not to work.

Mattmatic and I were working on a modification to the Hot Shoe Grip at about the same time. He documented his efforts which were similar to mine except I didn't make the hole for the locking pin, neither did I dismantle the HSG to make the hole for the extra contact, but it works.

After modification you can mount a AF540FGZ atop the HSG and connect it back to the hot shoe on the camera with the appropriate cables and hot shoe adapter, of which I believe there are third party products available that are much cheaper than the Pentax branded products. I stuck to Pentax. You cannot use the cable that would normally be used to connect the HSG back to the cameras hot shoe, it doesn't have enough conductors in it.

Essentially it gives you a PTTL hammerhead flash.

See this topic for images of the mod.

Very nice, I like 'em.

#1 might be improved by straightening the converging/diverging verticals

#3 composition is excellent with the path leading into the image

Good job, well done.

Here's a DIY one using the end of an extension tube! (and here on PUF)
The eagle-eyed among us will notice that the PUF member Mayday = the PentaxForums member CertEdFriday. Mayday posted the same images in my thread in 2010. Good of him to credit me on PentaxForums with the idea, but I think his version is better than mine simply because the locking mechanism remains intact.

Here's the Pentax version, it's called a "Reverse Ring Light Holder K" :-

Ring lights are usually supplied with adapter rings, so if you don't have the rings why not try SRB Griturn who make all sorts of rings and adapters.
Try and pay attention JR, the OP wants to mount the ring flash on the bayonet mount end of a reversed lens.

Pentax used to sell one, but I've never ever seen one advertised for sale, anywhere.

I made mine from an old manual extension tube and one of my many redundant filters.

I removed the female bayonet mount from the extension tube, removed the glass from the filter, and glued them together with araldite.

The only issue doing it this way is that the female K mount does not lock on to the lens mount. Perhaps a better solution is to use a complete, but thin, extension tube if you want a DIY solution, like Steve has said.

Unless you need the money for something else I'd keep the lenses you have. If you dispose of any, there will always be an opportunity to use them in the future. That's when you'll regret parting with them.

Also don't forget a decent charger to get the charge into the cell without degrading the cell.
Decent charger is not a problem Doug, I've used an Ansmann Energy8 with my Eneloops and 7Dayshop rechargeables with no problems so far.

I'll probably stick to Eneloops for now.
