I have some sympathy with the lack of C+C - the quality of the judging and comments has been progressively raised week on week for some time. I'd feel a bit reticent to offer critiques of such high quality work. I wouldn't object to the time it takes but would feel wary of the presumption that I could actually offer much in the way of positive input.
I think it's terribly important that people don't feel this way.

One of the most marvellous things about photography, is that the impact of a picture is largely subjective. If you like or dislike something about a picture, for whatever reason, then you have every right to your view.

There are things that are objectively true or untrue about a picture, and there's lots to discuss, agree and disagree about, but that has nothing to do with whether someone's entitled to like it, and say so, and why.

If you're the judge, you've earned your right to set the criteria by which the competition is judged, and it's perfectly fine for those criteria to be your own. The only thing I would expect from a competition judge is the ability and willingness to articulate why they like or dislike the pictures in question.

And this has absolutely nothing at all to do with whether those reasons fit some imagined level of photographic level of 'educatedness', whatever that might be.

The day we get to the point that we're so collectively up ourselves here that only the so-called experts feel able to offer an opinion, is the day I'll be out of here.
Hear, hear! C&C is the whole point of this competiton and without it, it is valueless IMHO.

It is challenging I agree when you are first faced with the task, but the prize (not just being FIRST!) is the amount of knowledge you gain from pulling folks pics to pieces! and of course acknowledging the good ones! I love it!

What I am trying to say is HAVE A GO and here on this forum everyone is so very amiable and helpful that it should not be seen as an intimidating task.

I thought my son had a good comment on Lilly's pic - he said it looks like a "playground of candy".

Oh, just realized I can't enter either. Hopefully be fixed when I check back later.
How observant your son is, I love it!

Is it my imagination, or does the sand in the middle look a bit 'swirly'? Makes my eyes go a bit funny.

With such a straight horizon, I would have been tempted to just use the best exposure for the beach, and the best for the sky, and just splice them together.

Dan
never noticed the swirly sand!

Yes, thanks for yr comments, I do agree with doing a sandwich, will try that next, good idea....

Why does the upper right hand portion of the frame seem blurred? Is it an effect or result of a windy day etc.?

Paul
yes, blurred clouds because they were moving over the three exposures.

I shall try to be as succint as possible:

This was my second email to said party:

I emailed your group via your contact web address a week ago regarding the matter that you had flagrantly abused my copyright on my images of **** by photocopying my images from the **** and displaying them on your website.
I see that you have not corrected this matter by removing said images, may I remind you that if someone re-uses my or other persons photos without their permission you are infringing their copyright. This is illegal. I can charge you whatever I see fit, for using my photos, I can demand you remove them and stop using my photos, or I can sue you....your choice.

This got a response within hours! with veiled threats of taking me to court for infingment of 'their' copyright of their faces, because I did not get permission to take their photos in a public place. And if I did attempt to sue them I would be laughed out of court.
Also it was demanded that I donate monies received from the pics (NONE! I only did it for a pic credit and posterity!) to a charity.

Things got very heated, but I attempted to calm the situation and educate the party my copright rights and UK law regarding photography.

ie. under UK Law there are no restrictions on taking photos in a public place or on photography of individuals, whether they are adults of minors and there is no right to privacy in a public place.

TBH, so many people are so unfamiliar with what they are at liberty to do regarding photography and it is up to us to educate them as best we can. I know not many months ago I was ignorant also, but I am learning fast.

I was informed there was an attempt to get my pernmission but not a very determined one, so, scanned newsprint images were put on their website all the same.
I was more upset with my photography being portayed in a very shoddy way more than anything, but there was no excuse for them to do what they did.

Waters have been smoothed, the terrible scanned newsprint images have been removed and as they are a group that raises money in a cultural way I have donated a few images low res to be ONLY used on their website, with link to my website for advertising, as they did emphasise how good my images were and I have now had invites for further events!

There it is, they have learnt a lesson and my experience in these matters has improved.

Then to top it all, today I discover a full page spread of my pics in full glossy colour in a Cornish monthly has been incorrectly credited to another photographer!
I GIVE UP!!!

EXASPERATED LILLY!

Just picked up this thread as I have just discovered a relatively new website/forum has copied some of my website images and is using them in their "header" on the site.

I've emailed each of the site administrators notifying them of copyright breach as the first stage. I'm awaiting their response, the info on this thread may well prove useful

simon
Look forward to your reply with anticipation also, I hope it wont be as beleaguered as was mine, details to follow, need to word it out!

I have been thinking, and this is the result.

Stage one. Send an invoice for a reasonable fee for the use of the image(s), together with a polite letter pointing out that they are in breach of copyright, and have ten days to remove the images or pay the invoice.

Stage two. Either bank the cheque, or after ten days contact Thomas Higgins and ask them to send a letter before action. The miscreants then have seven days to pay or face legal action and costs.

On the eighth day, TH will contact you and ask if you want to issue a summons. If no payment has been received, say yes.

Stage three. Bank the cheque.

The initial letter is now £2.00 (was £1.50 fifteen years ago when I used them regularly).

Note that this technique will work with proper businesses in the UK, but not people operating from a garage in Mongolia.

YES, useful thank you G, have saved info for a future date, fortunately have not had to go down the legal path 'this time'! But this is a learning curve and in this situation 'too much info' is not a dangerous thing, me thinks!

Well, so far after 5 days of notifying the said local group about them flagrantly abusing my copyright, I have had no response from them.
Can I ask how you "notified" them? Was it e-mail, telephone call, letter, fax? I'm just thinking that some people aren't as keen as others about checking their e-mail, some tend to take less notice of "ordinary" letters and faxes than others.

Perhaps a Recorded Delivery letter or a Solicitor's Letter might elicit a better response?

Ray.
I emailed them, I have had a developement - successful, will post details later.
