Thank you Lilly, glad it was helpfull and no worries about the 3 topics running
You also posted also in the other topic but will combine them into one here.
The WD studio is formatted for MAC but you can easly chance that so that it works on Windows so no worries there. You simply need to Format the disk to another kind of sytem file. MAC use HFS+ and Microsft use NTFS
Now about the connections, there is a nice table here link
if you have normall firewire, USB2 would be faster but like Shim said you can buy PCI cards with eSATA that you can connect to your motheroard.
eSATA card you can also save money like Pete said and get the cable I showed you link but that won't be Plug & play like he said
To give you some times, your backup of 75GB (76 800MB) will take theoratically;
USB2 = 21 minutes
Firewire 400 = 26 minutes
Firewrie 800 = 13 mintues
eSATA = 4.5 minutes
Like I said these are theoratical numbers, so it will take some longer in the real world.
I plugged it in and TG did not automatically download any SW. Tried to copy over a folder to test and no probs, but wd not let me delete said folder.
I am not very au fait with these things - it has been suggested that I just format the WD Passport EHD via my Windows XP converter FAT32 to NFTS which will make life a lot simplier, this seems logical - I am correct in doing this?
PS) if I do format it, do I check boxes 'Quick Format' or 'Enable Compression' ot neither? please?

You can look at the back of your computer to se if you've the connection, that's the easiest way. they look like this link
This drive also comes with esata but it it lacks the Firewire 800 but it still does have the 400 and usb2 link
You can also save just a bit more and get this one link
this is an artical of 1,5 years ago of the previous models but you get an idea on how they preform link
Reviews of the new drives;
Lacie d2 Quadra
Western Digital My Book Home Edition (studio edition is almost the same except the firewire 800 so far as i can find out)
edit
Extra tip, convert the hard disk to NFTS if you use Windows that way it's easier to recover any data when something goes wronf or accidently delete something
btw why are there 3 topics running over external harddisk now?
My fault one of 3 posts on EHD mine as it was just meant to be cooling ? then develped into more, sorry... perhaps someone can transfer them together?

After reading all comments, I think I am looking at:
WD My Book Essential (usb only)
WD My Book Studio (+ with fire wire)
or possibly
WD My Passport
Now, one more question if anyone can answer for me:
I have noticed (just!:roll that I have a firewire socket on the front of my pc tower. It states it is Firewire IEEE 1394.
I have noticed that on the WD My Book Studio it has USB 2.0 & FireWire 400/800 eSATA connections - which I presume will be a helluvva a lot faster file transfer rate that the plain old USB.
Will my Firewire IEEE 1394 be compatible with it? (I dont understand the 400/800 eSATA bit)
I am beginging to think firewire wd be advantageous in time saving, as I usually do a weekly backup, which is straight copy of 'My Docs' which usually takes about 45 mins for 75GB of data to an internal USB HD.
Thanks
Lilly
PS) just noticed ..damn.. the studio is formatted for Apple, thats a bummer.

I have a Freecom network 500Gb - pretty good. Lots of features (it's running Linux inside), so can do other things. However, it's not as fast as I'd like. I'd definitely recommend Freecom stuff.
At work I've just got a Lacie Quadra. Now that is a lovely piece of kit! Blazingly fast and with multiple interfaces (Firewire 400/800, USB 2, eSATA). Highly recommended!
Matt
but, have just noticed how do I find out if I have a esata card?
quote"As mentioned earlier, there was no surprise that the drive performed best when attached via eSATA, but for a single drive device like this, the performance difference may not be worth the effort and expense of buying and installing a third-party eSATA card. "

I am about to buy anither external hard drive, there was a good write up in FEB issue of 'Digital SLR Photography'.
I fancy the Freecom 500Gb or the Lacie 500GB, but one is heat sync and the other fan cooling.
I presume the heat sync will be quieter than the fancooler, but are there any other considerations to take in regards these differences?
All comments gratefully received.

Have you looked at Western Digital?
Western Digital, no, any recommendations for 500GB?

Hi Lilly,
I have the Lacie 500GB EHD and I believe its fan cooled. If so its very quiet, just a low hum. It's far more quiet than the fan cooler in the computer.

I should leave the 'quick format' & 'enable compression' boxes -
both UNTICKED ? as it is a new external Hard Drive.
thanks Lilly
