One possibility is that you simply aren't outputting sufficient power for the conditions. Don't forget that diffusers cut the light output quite considerably, and if you are using a smallish aperture there may not be enough power.
G
so, considering the Stofen diffuser will decrease range by 2-21/2 stops, you're already down to 13.5m @ f1. Shoot at f8 (and ISO 100), and you're down to 3m or thereabouts.
That's the problem with measuring light. Each f stop higher results in 1/2 the light reaching the sensor. Go to f16 in the above demonstration, and you'll be lucky to light your shoes up..
Hope that helps.. (and I'm sure someone will correct the maths if I slipped up somewhere..)

in Windows Explorer, right click the photo, then Properties | Summary | Advanced and it will give you the EXIF info, which will include Date/Time, shutter speed, ISO, aperture and lots of other stuff you might want to know.

that's normal, and there's nothing wrong with either you or the camera.
I think, off the top of my head, that the K10's viewfinder shows 95% of the image (it varies across the Pentax range), so it gives you a margin of error in reality. If you see it in the view finder, it'll definitely be in the final shot. Much better than chopping off a head.. (not that you can do that with TTL finders anyway.. in theory)

It took me a while to find, but I posted this up last year as an explanation..
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

in the above image, the larger (shaded) area relates to the size of the 35mm film plane, and the smaller area in the middle relates to the size of the digital sensor in comparison.
(And no pedantry points for noticing I got the depth of the sensor wrong in relation to it's width.. by the time I'd noticed, I'd already done most of it.. )

The above will be the two images, at a 100%.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hope that helps..

Hi Nik,
and welcome to the forum. Your post seems to have been missed but this will show it as a replied to post, and everyone should see it again. Hopefully someone will know the answer for you. I'm afraid I don't.

agree with Tim, the second shot of the heron is a cracker. The orange reflection really adds to the composition as well.
I like the swan as well. You got a catchlight in his eye, which always helps.

Only the AF360 needed batteries replacing after about 190 shots - thought that was pretty excellent, IMHO.
do you use rechargeables? I use Uniross 2500mAh in my 360, and although I've probably only taken 70 or 80 shots, plus modelling light, with it, they're still going strong.
At about £1 a cell, and a fast charger for £10 (IIRC), they'll work out far cheaper in the long run. You're meant to get around 1000 charge cycles per cell before they go bad. I've got four sets, (and bought 4 battery cases for £2 to keep them in) as I use them for my DL as well (7-800 shots probably per charge), and I've never been caught out !!!!! famous last words.
