I prefer the original. The sunrise glow is what makes the photo a stunner.
I am deeply envious of you on so many levels - having such a wonderful place to walk, having the ability to walk it, and the ability to capture such a scene.
The only beech tree on my estate (The Beeches, see the irony!) has turned a lovely orange this week which means the annual foliage hunt is on, I have not been too successful this last couple of years and am hoping to do better this time around, this will mean a lot of low level 10-12 mile walks in September and October, sore legs for a bit then...

Great set to if images.
In response to my comments on another thread and in this thread. I bought the d600 as the price was to good to ignore and I love the images from it but having been spoiled by the k-5 mk11 focussing system I didn't think the d600 focussing system would be as bad as it is in low light I can only compare it t to my old Samsung GX20 it really is that bad. It also seems strange to have a cameras af system hunt again after usng the k-5 mk-11.
As for going to a d800 held one didn't like it and have no need for 40 megabyte images thank you.
But point taken, maybe the new D750 would be your kind of vanilla?
I had a D800/E and despite all the reviews to the contrary found that in comparison to my D600/610 they felt like a bar of soap!
Alledgedly the D810 is better but if you have no need of that kind of resolution that point is moot...
None of them are as nice to handle as my K3, I never realised how important that was to me...

Good effort on all of em there, often I use a grad in the sky part of my shots to hold the light back and inevitably this leads to clouds that get overly dark and like you I tend to just leave em as they add to the drama but Neil has a point, clouds don't tend to get right to black but I have seen them get pretty near to this at this very location, so it is not totally unrealistic. It can be a hard balancing act on that scene in the afternoon because your starting to look into the sun and there is always some bright part to the sky, and it's really difficult to hold all the detail, darkening the clouds acn be the only option. Unless you are prepared to spend time blending and cloning and ending up with a result that looked nothing like it was when you shot it...
An aside Rant Aimed at nobody in particular:
Youtube has a lot to answer for, I have watched an awful lot of very very good American Landscape Photographers do talks on Adorama and B&H and lost respect for most of them. They tend to blend like it's going out of fashion, go out and take pictures of skies to put in shots later, replace a sky at the drop of a hat, and even add foreground rocks and features that were never there! I'm not against tinkering nor giving mother nature a helping hand to look her best but if you completely change the shot that you saw at the time, what was the point in going? I begin to doubt that anywhere in America actually looks like it appears to anymore...
Now these are black clouds!

As I said earlier, the colour is pretty much as is, the only real alterations were with the clarity slider to try to cut thru the gloom and a general pop and sharpen...
Maybe I'll grow to like it...

Sorry, just re-read Fletcher's opening post ! Its easier for us 'hobbyists' with limited budgets - most of us are effectively 'stuck' with the system we've chosen - it becomes a commitment, and then something to defend.
For those earning money, its clearly a more difficult choice ... I was puzzled by Gary Cabstar's recent comment (can't find the thread now to reply directly) about Pentax autofocus in low light venues ... he was singing its praises, but he'd made the move to Nikon, presumably to get better autofocus / low light performance specifically for his venue shooting needs ??
I've just come from Nikon and Fuji and re-re-re-committed to Pentax but then I do not need the low light capability of the larger Sensor from the big "I AM". If Gary moves up from his current D600 (From memory!) to a D8xx (Preferrably a D810), he will very likely find what he seeks in the AF department, Same goes for Fletcher8, (OP) He shoots indoors a lot and equestrian events, which I have also done at times and on a dingy day with trees for a background there is not much light, high ISO is the order of the day and the larger frame is a bit better, simple as. To me it's only a little bit better but that bit may be all the difference to these two members.
I am finding the K3 AF to be very good in low light it can almost see in the dark but I am under no illusions as to it's high ISO capability, it's good, very good for an APSC sensor but it is still an APSC sensor. I'm still figuring out the AF for moving subjects, it's a bit like a Nikon with it's AF hold settings but without the area modes, need some time at the local Airfieled when I get my 300 to work this one out...

I've been delighted with my DA*300 and 1.4TC, I haven't missed my Siggy 150-500 at all and I don't find the fixed focal length restrictive. I wouldn't swap mine for the 100-400 unless it is absolutely stellar or I have a full frame camera.

David
Sigh, It never ends...

The thing I await discovering with bated breath is - if/when the FF Pentax is finally delivered........
What will be the biggest gripe on the forum become?
....and at the risk of being branded a blasphemer - perfectly happy with my K5 and K5IIs and can't wait to pick up one of your cast off K3s when you switch to FF - which holds no interest for me at all
Carl
My only fear is that the "Full Frame" model will become the top line, which I think is a given and that this will start the dilution of the APSC line, I really hope that, that does not happen. I'd much rather any "FF" line was just that a whole new line like the K-S1 apparantly is and not affecting the "Core". That said I would wet myself laughing if they introduced a "FF" K-S1 in a range of bright colours! Look to the west and see a little mushroom cloud rising over the U.S.
