Jules, can you elaborate?
Matt
Simple, I like both, I'm starting to do a lot of Panorama's stiched vertically and My poor I5 PC really doesn't need half a dozen K3 shots to churn through in one go, so I am thinking of a K5II for my light kit and to take along for the ride as the Pano Shotgun on the more expedition like days. Not for any reasons of superiority of one over the other...
I had toyed with a Fuji Xe-2 and the Ricoh GR but the K5II/s just hits the nail really, cheaper too...

Another from this weekend's Celtic Challenge. I am still not sure whether Pentax is any good for fast action sport ..... I have another 800+ of these if you want further evidence of Pentax shortcomings
K-5iis coupled with DA* 50-135 - TAV 1/1000 F5.6 ISO 400 ... zero PP sharpening, shot as JPEG

Steve, how did you get them all to stand still like that, and then lean over like they were actually taking the corner at speed???

All superb!

Some of the best ones can be in easy places, first ones right by the bus stop in Patterdale? You have to be able to see it to take it though!
I like the second one best, difficult lighting, looks like the trail heading up to Angle Tarn? Judging by the rest of the series it looks like you went the other way and headed towards Howtown?
I'm after getting a lot of these "light beam" type shots and I'd be interested in your processing here, as these look pretty darn good to me.

Great series as always David, I prefer it when people let the really burnt out bits in sky's, err...Burn out.
I mean it's the sun after all and it is pretty bright!

I'm loving my K3 too but also wish I still had the K5IIs, despite it in no way being any sharper than the standard K5II eh? (I should be in the diplomatic corps!)

I think if you want a good quality body to "grow" with you will be hard pressed to beat a K5II/s, it would save you a heap of cash over the K3 and you could get an 18-135mm "Kit" then and maybe take advantage of a cheap 35/50mm fast DA prime for the same price, as the K3, those two would prettty much see you thru any Photography Course on their own, you can then use your Manual kit for personal use and special projects within your course because you understand those lenses better (Well, better than I do anyway:shock K5's are not the best at fast action, look it up around here it's been done to death but for the money they are not all that bad just not the same as CaNikon. If you like the feel of your current Pentax you'll likely enjoy the feel of a higher grade one like the K5/K3 but Blythman has sage advice, go to a Camera shop see what deals are available, it's the right time of year for it and hold the Canons/Nikons and Sony's and see how you feel about them. You now have the chance to get yourself into a system proper it is very wise to spend some quality time at your lesiure over the holiday period aquanting yourself with each's differeing way of doing things. There may be a dealbreaker/maker in there somewhere from one manufacturer over another, I know it's a Pentax forum but it would not be fair or proper to try to force my opinion (Pentax) on you, your requirements are your own and it's very important you get the Camera that you feel you want to learn with and not just that, that everyone tells you to get. It would be interesting and imformative to have an idea of the course material however but for most course work an advanced APSC DSLR of the Pentax K30/50/Canon 700D/Nikon D5300 ilk, would easily do. If you want to keep it/learn it/experiment with it more, then the Nikon D7100/Canon60/70D/Pentax K5II/IIs level would certainly more than suffice.
In fact you could easily be the envy of your classmates!

I'm loving my K3 but there are plenty who see snakes in the grass.
To me it's better in every way than my K5IIs with no downsides at all.
Noise when it does come is very granular and regular, very like film but without the colour blotching, I got from my K5 st ISO 3200 and above, cleans up better too. I like you don"t really photograph  black cats in coal cellars at night, If I did, I'd go out and buy a Nikon Df tomorrow...

Might be time to grab them...
I'm thinking about changing one of my K-5's for a K-5II simply for the better AF. in no rush though. I'll buy a 2nd hand one anyway when the time comes
I'll get one for my "Super Lightweight" Go everywhere ready bag thats going to live in the hall. (Was toying with the Fuji Xe-2 but the Fuji's lovely as they are don't really do anything you can't do with a K5 save for being a Rangefinder.) I'm sick of leaving home without a camera and then seeing something I'd like to shoot. I'm hoping that Ricoh/Pentax keep one of K5 models going as I think there is room in the range for it, I'd not like them to slip back to only three APSC models, I'd actually like eventually to see the K5 get the new meter to fix it's percieved flash problems making it a great second shooter for a k3 user and a more worthwhile upgrade to a K5 "classic" user. The AF is probably worth it to you alone Smeggy as I know you like to shoot at night and there is definitely a difference there. I'll likely get mine second hand too but only because even the bargain price that it is new is still too high hor me.
It's odd how perceptions vary, Jules. Your "super light-weight" kit would, for me, be a super heavy-weight outfit! That's why a top quality compact, such as the MX1 would be ideal.

The Fuji XE2 is lovely but, as you say, really only offers a different user experience, albeit an interesting one. It's also too large to put in a pocket.

I almost never print anything, well I haven't for five years (the memory of all those boxes of slides and cupboards full of albums makes me shudder) so the kind of ultimate, pixel-peeping quality discussed on these pages is simply not an issue for me. Most shots look fine on a lap-top screen.[/quote]I was also thinking of a GR but I'm not really street shooter which seems to be the GR's forte (Not saying that that's all it's good for!) but I just can't justify in my head, nearly the same price for a Compact as a K5. I'd love something pocketable but want the quality/vesatility of the DSLR and I may as well use a DSLR that utilises the same lenses. GR has the quality just not the vesatility for me, MX1 tiny sensor but I love the camera as I love the Q7 too, I just feel if I went out on spec and got a killer shot I'd regret not having the bigger sensor, So a K5 it is...
