I have to say that the B&W looks like a nano-bot from the Stargate series...it makes the bug look sci-fi...and I LIKED IT!

Having said that if you were after a reality shot...go colour.

It's worse over here. There's a whole generation of people who use Celcius when it's cold but Fahrenheit when it's hot!! Like "Oh it was in the 80s today, lovely and toasty, but I hear it'll be minus 1 tonight!" I kid you not.
That is so funny!!!

A very interesting question....at 40 below the C and F meet on the thermometer...When -40...no matters what your reading is in...it is -40

Having said that, Canada is metric and we do our readings in celsius...unlike our neighbours,USA which use the British system and read in Fahrenheit! It is all a bit strange since we are part of the Comman Wealth...and they are not! (Historically were seperated from each other because Canada wanted to remain part of Britian...and The United States want seperation.)

We had a French Prime Minister in office in the seventies who believed that metric would sever us better in world trade...or something like that

My memory of it all was that in high school after 11 years of learning the British system , we were told that it would become obsolete...and we would all need to learn a new math!! Since we only had a year of school left...we would learn it on our own..as a teenager I could not have cared less!!

Now as an adult, the truth is, I fully understand each system but have my most comfortable zone in the British system.

Ps..Lots of fog today as it is starting to warm....it has risen to -17C.

Goodness this has now shattered my illusion of JudithAnn as some sweet, sensitive Canadian gal - it seems she's more likley some hard drinking, cursin', spittin' lumberjack or somesuch

How often do you have such weather?

My experience record is -36 C. It was in 1986. I was at countryside, helping my grandma. These days are still vivid in my memory.
(Usually the very cold weather goes down to about - 25 C. Only some single days per a year, if any at all)

At the moment it is -12 - 15 and it is like paradise There is thin layer of snow and sun shining. No wet and gray weather that I am really fed up.
Usually we have two or three "Cold-Snaps" in January and Febuary. They will last a week or two at a time...but this isunusually for this time of the year...Kind of make ya worried about when the REAL one HITS.

we came close to hitting -50 the other night... right now we got -40 (both include wind chill factor)...
So I feel for you.
you could throw a cup of hot coffee in the air and it would freeze and fall as ice crystals....
This year though...I've been staying in alot more than usual...
Ya Don...I am next door to you right now. I am in Grande Priarie Alberta..not sure how long I will be here..but for another month at least. I know, you know, what I am talking about. In Edmonton last week they broke a record....at the airport it registered 58 below!WOW! Hope January does not try to beat that

Thought I would post this here...as I was asked in the weekly contest "how I managed to take pictures in such extreme cold weather....and I do mean COLD!

....Just to tell how I took a picture at 27 below....

My camera was in a nice warm house...I bundled up real warm, tucked my camera under my coat, headed across the feild. Once I found the spot, I dug my camera out and took three shots. My cheeks were starting to sting so I tucked the camera back into my coat, pulled my scarf up around my face headed back to the house. The house was only a few minutes away.

As for yesterday and today being below 40...It is so cold that when you spit...it freezes before it hits the ground! THAT'S COLD

The cool thing about being this cold on the Prairies is the sky. It is never blocked by trees or mountains or hill ect...Once it is below 30, the frost hangs in the air much the way fog does...I call it frozen fog! The way that, this frost hit the sunrise, makes for fasinating skies. But expose skin freeze so fast it makes picture taking really hard. Yesterday my Sons eyelids froze....as he was working in the oil feild. It was the only exposed part of him

I am determinded to capture a few more shots over the next few days...they will have to be quick!
