Freezing weather...my story!

Thought I would post this here...as I was asked in the weekly contest "how I managed to take pictures in such extreme cold weather....and I do mean COLD!

....Just to tell how I took a picture at 27 below....

My camera was in a nice warm house...I bundled up real warm, tucked my camera under my coat, headed across the feild. Once I found the spot, I dug my camera out and took three shots. My cheeks were starting to sting so I tucked the camera back into my coat, pulled my scarf up around my face headed back to the house. The house was only a few minutes away.

As for yesterday and today being below 40...It is so cold that when you spit...it freezes before it hits the ground! THAT'S COLD

The cool thing about being this cold on the Prairies is the sky. It is never blocked by trees or mountains or hill ect...Once it is below 30, the frost hangs in the air much the way fog does...I call it frozen fog! The way that, this frost hit the sunrise, makes for fasinating skies. But expose skin freeze so fast it makes picture taking really hard. Yesterday my Sons eyelids froze....as he was working in the oil feild. It was the only exposed part of him

I am determinded to capture a few more shots over the next few days...they will have to be quick!

That IS cold - and I'm muttering here about our dank dreich weather and complaining I can't really take my new baby [ OK the K-x ] out since it's so nasty and there's really nothing worth taking in the immediate neighbourhood .

we came close to hitting -50 the other night... right now we got -40 (both include wind chill factor)...
So I feel for you.
you could throw a cup of hot coffee in the air and it would freeze and fall as ice crystals....
This year though...I've been staying in alot more than usual...
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

Goodness this has now shattered my illusion of JudithAnn as some sweet, sensitive Canadian gal - it seems she's more likley some hard drinking, cursin', spittin' lumberjack or somesuch

How often do you have such weather?

My experience record is -36 C. It was in 1986. I was at countryside, helping my grandma. These days are still vivid in my memory.
(Usually the very cold weather goes down to about - 25 C. Only some single days per a year, if any at all)

At the moment it is -12 - 15 and it is like paradise There is thin layer of snow and sun shining. No wet and gray weather that I am really fed up.

I've always said all this global warming stuff was a load of old cobblers! - Just an excuse for our governments to tax us more.
No man is worth his salt, who has not been banned from at least one Forum, and two Flickr groups.

Spit freezing on its trajectory from gob to ground might make an interesting series of time lapse images- what do you think Judith Anne?!

Usually we have two or three "Cold-Snaps" in January and Febuary. They will last a week or two at a time...but this isunusually for this time of the year...Kind of make ya worried about when the REAL one HITS.

Mike,
What weather you like then? I think -5 - -15 is an ideal for a winter.
It is defenetly better than to walk in mud under (or almost in)a gray mist, only a hint of a real day around you. Thats what some degrees of plus does here.
It is the fourth day of minuses and snow here, and its like God's blessing! I saw SUN (two days) again! It is still existing!!!

Although I wouldnt be glad to reach -58 C

Northern lights is not connected with the temperature.
I have seen some wonderful with no cold weather at all
But these are VERY rare here. A pity, of course.
I keep my fingers crossed for you JudithAnn...and Don.

I hadn't thought of the ground being frozen rather than mud.

I'd have to buy a load more clothes to manage with such low temperatures though. I would also have to persuade my wife it was a good trip which might not be so easy
