I think I will try a couple of other lenses first as is, then see if things feel the same.

I will then update the firmware and see what difference there may be.
Don't forget, once the firmware is updated there's no going back. If the latest K-5 does everything you want and appears to be better than your original, why not leave well enough alone!

Now when I display a portrait image in camera and hit the down arrow button on the back it displays 4 thumbnail images of the possible rotations, I can select the correct orientation for the image and it saves the correct data in the exif tag, it then displays the image in camera as portrait and when downloaded it displays correctly on the PC.

What you describe is the only way to do it with the K-500.

In their 'wisdom' Pentax decided an entry-level camera at the price point of the K-500 doesn't need;

•Weather sealing
•Viewfinder AF point display
•Electronic level display
•Image auto-rotation

all of which was stripped out from the K-50 when they spec'd the K-500, so, not a fault, it's by design.

You'll need to go up the range to the K-50 or above.

Copyright owning egotistical Neanderthal, surely?

I'd simply say to them that they are making it all too bureaucratic. They can keep what you've shot, but you retain copyright, but no more photography by you.

Then ask them to rearrange the following into a well known phrase or saying, 'nose, cut, one's, off, spite, face, to, one's'.

Being they have a committee, however, I doubt they'll be able to agree what the answer is, nor what it means if they do get it right, but no doubt it'll get some rules written to cover it.

Exiles, you don't give your location in your profile.

If you want to say where you are, could be one if us is local enough to meet up with a lens or two for you to try, which could help you decide whether its the body or lens that's the issue.

What we can't quantify is how many photographers avoid/dismiss Pentax becuase of the lack of FF... I have a ModelMayhem account, and a lot of the photographers on there are VERY sniffy about what the call 'crap sensor' cameras.... Ben Kanarek has just joined their ranks

There's no doubt FF offers an advantage for many shooters although my position is APSC is good enough for me, no matter how much FF appeals....
But Ben Kanarek has just told the world about his latest work - a video using the K-01. He still lists various Pentax cameras amongst his kit.
