K5 auto-focus

I have this week added a second K5 body in favour of my K7, and I have noticed a definite difference in the auto-focus between the two K5 bodies.

The new body bought this week from SRS has the older 1.01 firmware on it compared to the old one which has 1.14; however the new bodies AF is like lightning in comparison when using the same lens and settings.

The old body has taken just over 11,000 shots, so I suppose you could assume this is why there is a difference?

It may be daft to ask but I am interested to know if anyone has any thoughts on the reason for the difference other than age and use?

Try updating it to 1.14 and then comparing.

On mine it's not the speed that's poor, it's more the inconsistency of focus and hesitancy, particularly on the DA 17-70.

I don't think the speed should be any less on a camera that's done 11,000 clicks compared to a new one. Maybe Pentax have attempted to compensate for known focussing issues via firmware updates and this may have involved actually slowing down the AF and making it more deliberate?

It's a good suggestion to move it to the latest firmware and then check again, but you might be reluctant to do this if you think it's working better on the old firmware!

I think I will try a couple of other lenses first as is, then see if things feel the same.

I will then update the firmware and see what difference there may be.

Don't forget, once the firmware is updated there's no going back. If the latest K-5 does everything you want and appears to be better than your original, why not leave well enough alone!

Good point - some more testing to be done I think!
