When Pentax have such a cracking good 55-300mm lens, even in a low cost DA-L version if needed, why would we be interested in a Tamron with a reduced range?
Faster, silent AF, reputedly better IQ. The USD really does it for me, unless Pentax can produce a SDM version at a competitive price.

Very jealous John, you've just given me a target to aim for, just hope I can match it!
Match it, I'm hoping to see much better than that with your F* 250-600

The hide looks good but I prefer to have somewhere to stand up, your local nature reserve with established hides is probably the best bet, get to know some of the local twitchers for advice, but remember what they can see with a scope may not be within range of even a 600mm lens

Best of luck.

Thanks Kevin, it was worth every minute of the hours I spent waiting, besides an old bird watching friend of mine said it's amazing what you see if you stay in one place for hours on end. He was right plenty of things such as Damselflies landing on leaves in front of the hide etc.

Also in what kind of situation is the purple fringing likely to occur? I have seen the term used and sort of know what it means but I do not fully understand what kind of situation will cause it.

High contrast, i.e. branches against a pale or overcast sky:

You not got any hides locally Danny with sticks pushed into the water in front of them? These are put there for the kingfishers. Some guys sit staring at sticks for 8 hours a day

Kingfishers are such nervous birds it is SO tough to get close to them. The ones I've encountered here rarely let you get within 30 yds. Did the Damsel get away ?
We had one locally that was a right exibitionist Sadly I've not seen it for some time, but I've been told it's still around.
