As someone new to dslr I had assumed SR would be a good thing and should be used whenever possible. Some of my pictures so seem soft on occasions, although this may be me! As a rough guideline what speeds would you suggest the SR becomes unnecessary?
It would depend on the focal length of the lens, the longer the FL the more any slight hand movement is magnified e.g. 300mm = 6 times that of 50mm.

I'd like a firmware update to manually override SR settings so I could set in a multiplier for SR, 4 options in the menu 1.4x, 1.5x, 1.7x and 2x. That should cover all TC's in use and optimise SR for the focal length actually in use

I must admit I practically gave up on SR, especially when using a TC for wildlife on the DA*300 and the camera still works on 300mm instead of 450 or 510mm. I still use it for deliberately composed shots at slow shutter speeds such as this:

I've been told that a lot of pro sports/wildlife photogs switch IS or VR off when working as it complicates the issue. You can't beat high shutter speeds IMHO.

I have a kenko AF 1.5x teleplus DG converter boxed in excellent condition for sale if your interested.
I'm not sure the DG version works with SDM, I'd check first. I believe Don wants it for his DA*300.

Hi Howard, very nice, glad you finally made the decision. I've 2 tripods in the boot of the car, that never get to play out

I basically agree with Hefty. DSLRs won't last much longer IMO. Another 20 years maybe. By then every mobile phone will have some incredible video camera in it, where every single frame will be better than current dslr IQ. They'll have tiny liquid lenses which reshape themselves to change focal length just like an eye does. And they will be noise-free at some ridiculously high ISO.
My thinking too
Naah, never gonna happen, there are physical limits. Besides it would make the whole photography experience utterly futile.

Which 300mm f4?

A 300mm with decent teleconverter can outperform the 50-500mm by some margin, I use a F* 300mm and 1.7x Pentax converter and it is better than my Bigma.
+1, the DA*300 + decent 1.4x, 1.5x or 1.7x TC will outperform a Bigma in terms of IQ.

It may be advisable to avoid the Teleplus "DG" variant if you need SDM on Pentax lenses as I believe the new DG version doesn't support SDM. So it's s/h all the way unfortunately.
