Had a comment that the SDM motor could let you down. Their quietness would be a boon for birding.
The DA*16-50 had a lot of problems and some DA*50-135 but I never heard of a problem with one of the DA* prime lenses or with the newer SDM lenses. Yeah one with the DA 17-70 but cleaning the contacts solved that one.
The DA*200 and DA*300 seem very sturdy and reliable, the only lenses I've owned lately that reminded me of a genuine K series prime, solid yet with a certain finesse. The DA*16-50 is still very good, I've had no issues with mine yet.

John

Has anyone used the Pentax 1.7 converter behind the 80-320 and what can I expect for results using it for wildlife.

The 80-320 was a good lens, but I wouldn't really consider putting the 1.7x TC on it, it was acceptable at 320 but not great.

Hi Peter,

That was an interesting collection you had, did you have a purge?

Anything can let you down given time and use, the only lenses I've had problems with in the last couple of years have been FA's. The FA*85/1.4 refusing to AF when switched to MF then back to AF and my FA 135/2.8 went for a service as the results were no longer as sharp as remember. Michael Spencer sorted that for me, now it's as good as ever it was. I've had 3 SDM lenses for a few years, no problems as of yet, but who knows. If the DA*300 SDM plays up I'll use the Sigma while it's off for repair

John

Looks like it could be fun, but I'm trying to NOT buy anymore lenses...
Unfortunately I can't access Ebay from work, I've been looking for a prime to replace my Sigma 16mm/2.8 FE for some time but for digital. Reviews seen very positive, particularly @ f/8, well built, focuses in the correct direction oh and it's relatively affordable

John

1. I wouldn't give more then £450
2. If you're *only* worried about SDM then yes, buy the "f" it has a tripod mount the "FA" doesn't, everything else the DA*300. (I'd rather have the Sigma 300mm f/4 APO than a 300/4,5 and it would probably be cheaper, mine's not for sale!)
3. No idea
4. As above post
5. Not unnless it was the new Nikon 200-400 and even then I doubt it, one reason I'm put off the Sigma 120-400 OS HSM

John

One of the unicorn lenses much like the supposed DA* 28mm f2
A bit of a tangent here but I'd love to see a couple of 28mm primes. Say a cheap £150-£200 f2.8 which would be sold as a first prime (50mm is a bit long on APS-C, but I find 28mm pretty much perfect for walkabout use) and then the DA * f2 version as a premium one?
The FA 28/2.8 is a good lens, should be able to pick one up s/h for £200 ish. If I'm taking just one prime it's a toss-up between the FA 28 and Sigma 24. I like the Sigma 1:4 close focus ability, comes in handy at times

John

I bought an "as new" MF Sigma 24mm f2.8 Super-wide II a month or so back and took it with me on holiday to Kielder Campsite in Northumberland at the end of May..........

I don't know whether you've seen Kielder Skyspace (rather pretentious name for a building with a hole in the roof).

I reckon the 24mm Sigma is plenty sharp enough and is a definite keeper. Indeed, I don't feel any particular urge at the moment to take it off the camera.

Andrew
They should put a Camera Obscura in that building, it would be far more interesting. Love the Sigma 24/2.8 that much I have 2, one MF one AF. Very sharp and the close focus ability is really useful
