Davex, I shoot RAW + Jpeg. I have the pentax raw software and CS5. To be honest I havent spent too much time refining the raw images I have taken but they are there if i need them. The main reason for this is I do not fully understand the best way to work on an image. I know that all images are different and will require differing amounts of work but at the moment:
If you have a birthday coming up, ask for a copy of Real World Camera Raw, excellent book IMHO.

If you are often taking pictures of birds around your feeder, I should explore the possibility of a third-party lens collar. Or even a DIY version, like this:

Very good, I'd be tempted to sharpen a little. It's a Damselfly BTW.

I have used the Tamron 70-300mm lens a lot and found the quality verse price unbeatable, also very good macro abilities. Can be found very cheap on ebay.
Ditto

I have the early 24-70 EX DG, it is sharp and focus is fast and accurate, there's only minor distortion at 24mm, the filter size is 82mm (expensive). It's heavy but very well built, handles nicely with the K20d + grip, it behaves a bit like the A 35-105/3.5 did on film, but on digital...........a good walk around lens! In all it does nothing very badly, just gets on with the job......oh the rubber grip attracts dust easily. It's just a good allrounder and slots in nicely between a 10-20 and a 70-200. I'm a prime lens man so the best recommendation I can give is.........would you buy it again? Yes I think I probably would

Besides if I had some wonga I'd find it a hard choice between the 50-135 and 60-250.
The DA* 60-250mm is probably next.
Good choice
