If this were me I'd be suing Pentax without hesitation. Speak to Consumer Advice.
This is clearly an inherent problem and as such is nothing to do with you or how you use the camera. There is plenty of evidence here and on other Forums that it is affecting a lot of users. As such, Pentax should be liable. Don't be fobbed off. You should expect 6 years life from your camera.
CA will be able to guide you through making a claim against Pentax via the Small Claims process for the cost of the repair.
Pentax need to accept blame for this problem. Possibly a letter first to Pentax may get a result but if not I think John is right.

Is the repair very expensive?
Castle will probably quote me £350 or something horrifying like that.

Just wondering if this issue occurs in all K30's no matter which batch or serial number? My K30 with number 4513062 is 3 years old and just over 10100 actuation's and never had any problem.

We can all keep on saying it over and over, and fueling that sense of outrage and consumer entitlement ..... But lets think about the individual and what is the best response overall.
For whatever reason, be it Japanese Corporate culture or business honour, there's no admission of faulty manufacturing and no special extended warranty for the parts involved.
Time to move on to a new camera .... And no one here can blame Louise if she doesn't want another Pentax. However, a newer Pentax model that doesn't have any 'reputation' would always be a good choice because of familiarity and the lenses she already has.
