I have a Canon MG7550 and it takes chipped cartridges. I buy cheap 3rd part ones which must be similar to the ones the guys above use. I use it 2 or 3 times a month? The prints are excellent and I've not had a problem in the 2 years I've had it. It makes printing your own A4 prints quite cheap but with excellent results!

It's always going to be difficult to get true figures however the amount of people reporting they have this same problem seems to point towards a probable manufacturing fault - you don't hear K5, K3 etc owners with this same issue.

The entry level models might have plastic panels but they are still extremely well made and are an advantage to me as I tend to prefer a lighter camera if possible - I'm finding most of my photography is travel photography!
But at the end of the day I'm with Andrew - IQ is most important!
Have I seen somewhere that with the K70 they have improved noise reduction in the sensor?
