Hi David

I'm going to go against popular opinion here an say that I love the original shot, the un-cropped B&W version. IMHO it works much better than the colour version and has much more dramatic impact. I prefer your original crop as it has the lead in line of the stream which takes you eye down the valley into the lake and then to those glorious light beams. Also the bright spot on the Rock in the foreground, the bright lake and the sun breaking through the clouds give a trio of interest points to keep you eye in the picture. The detail in the foreground is brilliant and far from being distracting, I like it.

For me, cos I like that sort of thing, the only thing I'd do is increase the sharpness and clarity a little. Add a bit of exposure and bring back the blacks to give a slightly increased contrast. But these are just small suggestions for an already stunning picture...

Cheers Carl,

If I were posting pictures of my kids, I think that would come under 'Wild Animals' theme

Hope you're well my friend, far to long since I've seen you!

A discussion thread for the monthly competition 'The Human Zoo'.

I realise the brief might be a little vague, I'm better at taking pictures than writing words, so please feel free to ask any questions or discuss here. I have some examples of the sort of thing on my mind if people would find that useful? I didn't include them in the description of the competition as I don't want to steer anyone down a particular route, but happy to post if wanted

Cheers

Andy

Thank you to everyone that's commented and picked their favourites, it's interesting to see a few common picks but still a wide range of opinions

It was an interesting few days for me and made me think a little about my photography. The first day or so I really struggled and didn't enjoy taking pictures as much. There I was in such a beautiful place, all the gear, there was no reason I shouldn't be able to get some stunning shots right ? But it almost felt like I was obliged to if that makes sense?

Anyway a few days in when I visited Wastwater (where I sent most of the day) the first few hours I just sat my the lake which was very quiet and just enjoyed the countryside, the solitude, the lack of any mobile signal and didn't shoot anything. Then it just sort of clicked, the tripod came out and I started being very deliberate with the sort of things *I* wanted to shoot and the hours just disappeared. I think just taking the time to absorb the surroundings just made all the difference and even though I didn't need the tripod, it slowed me down and made me consider the shots. Most of them are are taken using manual focus on live view, on a tripod with a cable release. It was so much fun...

Anyway, will stop waffling now lol.

thank you all..

This is a very interesting set and a great mixture of locations. Your viewpoints and exposures have all taken advantage of the natural conditions very well indeed. Favourites for me are 7 & 8 because of the nice distribution of elements in both, natural tones in 8 and I also like the mono. A few ideas :

1) The yellow tones from the WB setting are a bit strong on the rocks and sky on the left side of the photo - this in fact creates an uneven looking WB with the right hand side, so I'd selectively lower yellow saturation on the left areas

2) Theres some odd luminous blue / cyan on a few of the rocks - probably the result of over-keen saturation boosting.

3) Opposite problem to No 1, here you've got blue all over the cloud shadows - an easy fix with a selection on the sky, then desaturation on blue / cyan channels, then a pull up on 'Luminance' to restore brightness.

4) Looks good to me

5) Could reduce the highlights a bit on the clouds, and a small brightness reduction on the mid tones.

6) Looks good also, slightly unsharp, but I appreciate if handheld it was a big effort, so well done

7) & 8 as above my favourites, very nice indeed!
Thanks for the details comments Nigel. I really appreciate the time you, and everyone else, has take to comment. There are some really good bits of advice there and I'll have a play with them this evening to see what I can do...

number 3 is so close to being really good but for me is spoiled by the positioning of the bush on the left! I would have preferred a 'cleaner' view without this bush, or alternatively with it more in the middle distance on a third, so it didn't hide the distant mountains.
Hi David, thanks for the comments. I do agree with now you've pointed it out, every time I look at it all I see is the bush lol. I think I have a similar shot taken from a slightly different view point so will look this evening.

Hope you are well
Andy

Thank you everyone for all the suggestions, very helpful

If I manage to get anything half decent I'll post during the week, although landscapes are not my strongpoint (and of course assuming I stay out of the pub long enough lol)

Thanks again chaps
