First ones for a while

I haven't posted many images on the Forum lately, although a few have gone into the Gallery. I've been busy on macro stuff, but had a thought that I should get back into what I love best, i.e. landscapes.

I wanted to post a shot that has been particularly difficult, so much so that it has sat on my hard drive since last December while I wondered what to do with it. I always knew I wanted to do something with it, but couldn't decide on the best approach. Anyway, I've now processed it as a blended image, two different exposures of the same shot, not HDR but done in two layers. This is in an attempt to retain the dynamic range I was seeing when I took the shot, I hope this goes some way to succeeding. It was taken with the K-3 and DA 16-45, with a Hitech ND Grad, either 0.6 or 0.9, I don't recall which.

Please let me know what you think, this is the black and white version but I can post the colour one too if anyone's interested.

Would love to see the color version. im afraid i don't like this and that's not often i say that about your photos. The foreground clashes with the ethereal sky IMO

Sorry David. The foreground is just flat and uninteresting. The lead in, isn't leading me in. The ridge is like a barrier

The sky is wonderful.

Back to the Drawing Board then? I daren't post the colour one now!

Have you tried various digital B&W filters to the foreground to see how they impact. e.g. compare the effect of a red filter v a green filter

Hi Alan, not tried this, may give it a go. Colour one's in the gallery, the foreground in this one has a lot more interest, let me know what you think?

Much prefer the colour David. I think a green filter would separate the grass from the rocks on the B&W

Lost a bit of contrast in the sky David, but the foreground is better. I now notice an annoying "stick" right in the foreground. Getting picky means you might be getting there

Yes Alan, those sticks are bloody annoying aren't they? That's easily within my capability to remove it, I did notice it but didn't bother removing just for uploading here, I wanted to know thoughts on the general image first.

Personally, I like the dark foreground as I wanted to lend the shot a bleak and dark look, but I now realise there's not enough definition there. The second attempt has gone too far the other way, but it was only a quick few seconds to apply a filter to the whole image, I made no attempt to retain the detail in the sky and this would be very easy to sort out.

I like the original post.
It's like emerging from the rough to gaze upon a new world.
The 'stick' was part of the scene, no reason for it to be cloned out imho.

The light rays in the sky work well and are striking, but for me personally, the foreground is not very interesting, my eye does get drawn down the stream into the valley, but from there I find it confusing as to where my eye should then go. However, from the images you have posted, the first is the better one.

Your Landscapes are very good, I guess we can't get things perfect every time, but thats the challenge of photography.

David - forgive me for doing so but I read this thread and looked at the various version with a little bit of a smile creeping on to my face.

Why? Simply because it is good to see that it is not just me who gets it in to my head that an image has potential and end up with several versions not quite working.

Frequently I end up returning to my first attempt after eventually accepting that the image has limitations.

I don't think the processing is the issue on this one - I agree with Alan - the foreground just doesn't do justice to the rest of the image.

For me the only thing you haven't attempted is a radical change to the crop to remove the problem - such as this:
