Apologies if this sounds silly, but couldn't Rataegeoff use a bright, wide prime lens then crop (within reason) accordingly?
It depends what the picture will end up being used for. If it's only going to be a small resolution picture that'll end up on a website then this would indeed be possible, however, if the pictures are likely to need printing at some point then it's wise to have as much resolution (ie as little cropping) as possible.

I was thinking of getting either the Sigma 105mm or Tamron 90mm af lenses but after using the Sigma 50mm I can now see why getting the Pentax 100mm with quick shift focus would make a lot more sense.
This was my reasoning too and I haven't regretted the decision once (and the Pentax is quite a bit lighter making it easier to hand-hold).

As for non-macro use, mine probably gets used around 10% macro / 90% telephoto - it really shines at longer distances and the 1:1 capability is a rather nice bonus.

The K20D has a plastic bodyshell with an underlying chassis frame made from steel. Some of the high(er) end cameras from other manufacturers have a magnesium alloy bodyshell.

I don't think one method of construction really gives a particular advantage over the other though tbh...

Ok Dan fare point but lets look at say the sigma 10/20 and the pentax 10/17 lenses of similar focal lenghts and prices does pentax still have the edge then.
Ian
Those two aren't really comparable. The Sigma 10-20 is a rectilinear design (ie straight edges remain straight) whereas the Pentax 10-17 is a fisheye (ie buckets of deliberate barrel distortion).

A true comparison would be between the Sigma 10-20 and the Pentax 12-24; the Pentax lens is dearer and not as wide, however, I (among many others) was convinced it was worth the extra £££'s because of the superior results.

Sigma, Tamron, etc produce fine lenses "for the money" but given an unlimited budget I doubt many would fall into peoples' "dream" lists...

Hi Dave, welcome to the forum. The tilt/shift bellows sound interesting - where can you get those from or was it a lucky eBay find?

Is there some news about the F-number of the DA 15 ltd & DA* 30?
The 15 is f4, the 30 is rumoured to be f1.4 (replacement for the FA50/1.4).

As for my "dream" line-up, I'm almost there:

DA12-24 (got)
FA31 or DA35 + DA*30 (not yet decided)
FA43 (got)
DA*55 (M50 currently acting as place holder)
FA77 (got)
D-FA100 (got)
M200 (got - but willing to swap for A*/FA*200 Macro if anyone's interested? )
FA*600 (in my dreams!)

I'd also keep my DA18-55 as a small, competent, lightweight walk-about lens. That'll do.
