You're not missing anything, it should work like other lenses as you describe. It sounds like there's something wrong with this lens unfortunately.

I've got a Lensbaby, it's fun for a while but it's a bit fiddly for precise work like macros. I've always fancied a Hartblei but they seem to be thin on the ground (and expensive!) now too...
@ Matt - you wouldn't want any of the ones on there right now, they're all rubbish I heard. Better let someone with a lower budget pick them up instead...

Bubbles should have no effect on image quality nor, for that matter, on resale value. I've never had a bubble in a Pentax lens before but I have seen them in other-brand lenses.
Of course, if there's anyone out there with a FA31, FA200 Macro or DA*300 that has bubbles let me assure you it's totally worthless and you should forward it to me for disposal - I'll give you a token tenner for it.
