First proper camera I used was a Spotmatic that belonged to my art teacher at school. As a class we got to use it for a project. The feel and ability to see what would be on the film accurately was missed until my father gave me his old Zeni 11.
I now have a cupboard full of Pentax bodies, all second hand and working, listed here. Most have been used by myself and those that haven't will be over the next year or so.
Current favourite.....MX

The final word
The K-x is a very capable little camera indeed. Pentax has managed to squeeze what is, for this class of camera, an impressive feature set into the camera's minuscule, rather inconspicuous, body and the image quality, especially in low light, is the best we have seen so far in the entry-level bracket of the DSLR market. To put some icing on the cake, all of this comes at a currently, compared to the closest rivals, very attractive price point. To us the lack of visible AF points is the camera's only real drawback but if you can live with this omission you can't go wrong with the Pentax K-x.
This is the first review I've seen that actually places the K-x against the EOS500 and not the cheaper EOS1000, and done by an independent body who's not on the advertising payroll of the big three.
Very encouraging.

That kx is a 500 quid camera here is outrageous, bearing in mind it's poor reputation and vanilla spec, especially when the rest of the world considers it an 'entry level' item
I think not.
Vanilla spec? What the heck do you mean by that?
As for entry level, that's what the press call it, not the user who own it!
No I don't own one and am not going to buy one. I just feel your statement, Viewfinder, is as usual provocative and miss informed. This thread is about ALL Pentax products and buying abroad.

Shipping and 1.7 converter included it cost just over £600.
Then the customs men wanted VAT off him...
... he still paid a LOT less than the UK retail.
Why order from abroad and save only £30ish when you can save much more?
If you need a good warranty then buy in the UK, otherwise...

It seems that a fast card write speed should allow faster continuous shooting. Unless the camera can't keep up with the card.

Oh yes, they do a Sandisk one even cheaper!
Sorry.

Is it worth getting one or do I just wait until I need faster cards for, say, a new body?

I have both A and M versions, all of which give excellent results.
