+1 to that. Even if I (god forbid) eventually ended up buying a different brand for the ff and wide angle zoom.

It isn't. The African plains don't slope and neither do cloud bases.

Boy do I need help, please. Forgive the preamble but it does serve a point. Using a Canon 700D, for birds in flight shots, I just put the shutter speed to +/- 1000th and fired away and got a lot of good shots.

Right thought I, just do the same with the K-50 and Bob's me uncle. Wrong! As you can see from the blackbird shot in my gallery, that is not a very good shot but it is about the best that I managed. I went from 800th to 1600th and it got no better. Most of the bird shots were too dark and some weren't in focus. My 55-300mm new type lens hunted an awful lot.

The flower shot is far too dark and like my bird shots I couldn't find any way to get the picture at an acceptable brightness. The weather has and still is a very sunny, and bright day. So why am I struggling or should I have stuck with the 700D. Please don't say yes! Both shots are in my gallery and the wildlife one.

These may be of interest as they are similar subjects taken with a similar setup and at similar settings. Pentax K5 and DA55-300. Respectively 1/1600th, 1/1000th and 1/800th. I certainly think the 55-300 is an adequate lens, especially for the price. Autofocus has improved since my K5 but nonetheless I think it's ok - I found the opposite to you, the keeper rate being high. I mostly use my camera on manual setttings in any case now, as I think I can guess the settings better than the camera can. My advice would be to use whatever you are most comfortable with as that plays a big part. If you think what you are using is inferior then the results will be inferior as frustration will override technique. I have though seen a few photographers switch brand because of frustration for one reason or another. They invariably think that the new kit is much better. Sometimes it is, especially where a vast injection of cash is involved. Mostly though I think they are under a misapprehension and their results remain about the same. In the worst case the 'upgrade' leads to more frustration and the hobby goes out the window.

Here's a 100% crop for those that enjoy a little pixel peep. It could be better, but how much better does it need to be? Incremental benefits get very expensive so for regularly incomed amateur togs there has to be a 'that'll do' point.

I found that at 300mm then the 55-300 didn't handle strong contrast that well - it gave smeary edges with bright whites so that could be an issue for bird photography. So my that'll do point came with the DA*300. It gives me excellent results that I don't see need to be any sharper - they are simply good enough, certainly for what my eyes can resolve.

Good luck with whatever you end up using.

I am pretty sure that the FALtds will be no bigger, no more expensive and no heavier on a full frame camera.

Very interesting, thanks for that.

No-one ever said that APS-C or 4/3 or whatever format wasn't capable of great images. In fact for telephoto work then smaller formats have a crop factor advantage. Most arguments for full frame are a lot more rational than 'it's better'.

It depends what you mean by competition. There are cameras with larger sensors and lower pixel density which trounce the low light iso performance of the K5. In relative terms the K5 is very good, but in absolute terms there are big improvements available. Hopefully the Pentax full frame will provide a sensible balance between pixel count and low light noise.

I agree with you Gary that the other forums have not really picked up and balanced the total activity - there's much less I feel going on overall. Could be that many have been put off participating at all because of bad feelings, or (as it is for me) its just a practical hastle to try to keep up with multiple threads spread around?

I'm not really so sure about the idea that people would leave the brand BECAUSE they can't make comparisons and see images from other makes here on PU ??? Did you not yourself read reviews and get advice on non-Pentax forums, compare technical specs, and listen to what people working around you with other makes were saying? Did you not make you choices based on weighting up information from many places.?

I'm a member here, and gladly offer information and advice on using the K7 / lenses or other aspects of the Pentax system that I've got experience with. But I'm not able to tell anyone what is best in practise about a technical aspect between the K7 and a 7D - because I've never used a 7D! Do you think this site would be better if everyone used more cameras so they can offer comparisons? Thats not what I think its really about here ....
But thats the main problem with the forum, where do you go to get a fair comparison from users about other marques and compare with Pentax if you cannot discuss other marks within this forum. Pentax users are few and far between so this forum would be perfect to discuss the positives and negatives of brand ownership compared to other marques.

Im in favour of going back to Pentax, yet under current rules cannot discuss the brand I am currently using, what is good about the brand I'm using and why it sucks compared to Pentax. If the forum wants to increase membership and Pentax brand ownership then active discussions comparing other brands should be allowed. By not having these discussions smacks of something to hide or that Pentax is an inferior product, which of course it isn't.

At the moment for example you annoy even post similar images from one brand to compare with Pentax which to me is just stupid, I understand the not posting other brand images but when doing comparisons why not?

Ah well, I will drop in again next weekend....
Gary, I would really like to hear of the experiences that you outline above so if you get a chance to outline these somewhere I will be watching. In the light of the official ff acknowledgement I think your views are very valuable.
