I think Clarky's got some kind of weird circus, full of trained insects.....
I got the tools, the know-how, but am sorely lacking in the patience department....
Anybody interested in seeing a series of well lit, well composed, macro shots of insects that have had the shoe/newspaper treatment? They sit real still....

interestingly enough, nikon makes an adapter similar to that one, (solid plastic) and I've used it for years.

It may simply be that particular unit wasn't contacting properly on your camera.

I seem to remember bumping into a nikon shooter, who was having problems with one just like that, and it worked fine on my camera, but was very tempermental on his.

I love shooting low light shots, was at it last night with exposures up to 60-120 secs so I don't altogether agree with Don that the best shots will be had when the light is within the metering capabilities of the camera. Some of my shots can often run into minutes... Don's advice about the best times to shoot is spot on tho, but I often find that there's useful colour in the sky up to an hour or (maybe) 2 after sunset.
no arguments here. I often shoot long exposures at night.
sometimes you have to gear the advice to the level of the asker.

I wouldn't offer advice on sliding or drifting a car through a corner, or using the other guys draft to pass, if I was helping somebody who's trying to pass thier drivers test.

I think the nature of the question, suggests a little help on starting out was needed. starting out with the basics on night photography will yeild the best results, for the original poster, and provide a solid basis on which to experiment.

your advanced advice is unquestionably good advice.
love that shot btw!

your best shots, will be within the cameras metering abilities.

try shooting at dawn or dusk (1/2 before to 1/2 hour after sunrise/sunset)
meter for your highlights (eg interior lights, streetlamps etc.). At some point you'll get a perfect balance between the city lights and darkening sky.
try incandescent light balance for a start, iso 100(upto-400).

try after a rain when everything is still wet for added drama.

other than that, trial and error, and a notepad will get you there.

some good points there. but time is money, and it is hard to justify having a "high maintenance" site.

I'd list the items this way:

once clicking on dslr's I'd list the dslrs from most expensive to least expensive.( placing cameras from each manufactures top, mid and bargian models on the same page listed by price). ie: 1 page has nikons best besides olympus's best beside pentax's best.

Make the link to the next page right beside a sign that lets them know the prices are listed from most to least.

Reasoning? The low end models look like an even better bargian, when you've seen the prices on the pro models!

clicking on a model (More from this manufacturer) would open a page showing all the kits, and accessories from that manufacturer, and pricing on lenses etc from third party manufacturers.

also sorely missing is a customer feedback page. anybody who comes to this forum, is going to find out pretty quickly what this company's reputation is..... too bad he doesn't have any of those comments on his own site, with a link or two back here (and other places) so customers can "Check him out"....

regarding range.....
just out in my yard....
I haven't measured it, but my yard is pretty big (one acre actually).
in length it is almost one city block. (I have a four bedroom house and you could easily fit five more like it). I was able to reach corner to corner diagnally across it.

will get out measure the max range this week if I can.

there it is, a dark stripe!
not present at 1/160 but visible at 1/180.
definately caused by the shutter.
it would obviously show up more on shots where you are using more powerful flash pops, (f22 in my cases was near black, f2.8 imperceptable).
perhaps the radio slave causes a delay when used as it encrypts the signal?
perhaps the pentax flash is just faster?
most likely the speeds on the elinchrom ads, applies to using the rx recievers with the rx flash units.....

all this time I've been using 1/160 with no probs.....

see? there's the fatal flaw in Darwins Theory..... sometimes luck favors the dumb. And with millions of years of evolution behind us, we've had plenty of time to weed out the dumb ones..... so next time somebody pulls out into a busy intersection, pulls accross three lanes, with no signal, cutting off several cars just to slow down to a crawl in front of you.... just remember this idoit is Gods Idea of a joke, and laugh it off!
