To elaborate some more, I'm not saying it is good to go work for free... but when industries get turned upside down, for any reason, there will be opportunities for upstarts and fresh blood with new talents and ideas...

so in photography, where low prices and high quality imaging devices combined with internet sharing, and high demand for images... I see both the fashion world and magazine publishers at risk of major upsets by upstarts that come out of nowhere... between social networking, webblogs and viral marketing... people may not feel the need to travel to Milan or buy Vogue magazine to find thier next 'Look' in the not too distant future...

Today on a generalist Photo Forum under the Portrait Fashion category, someone from a small independent and in my opinion based on what I saw on their web site, not very good fashion magazine, placed an ad for photographers for their magazine. Now that seemed strange in the first place, which I go on to explain in the copy below. Here is part of the content of her query.

I have left out the name of the magazine and the name of the person.

"..We are looking for an up and coming photographer each month to shoot images for our cover. This is an unpaid commission, but provides great exposure as the cover stays on the front page for one whole month.."

Hello ...

My concern is that if you are coming to a forum to seek out photographers for your magazine, then that speaks volumes about the credibility of your magazine. I have been in this strange business for over 20+ years and do know one thing; the minimum one should know is where the sources are, where the press offices are which agents represent which photographers and what are the agencies representing the models etc. Now, perhaps you are new at this, so I will consider this query as naive, but, I do know that if I had to put production together and I wasn't the photographer, I would know exactly where to find them.

That tells me, that getting exposure in your magazine could be considered poison in disguise, wrapped in a sweet chocolate covered coating. Why? Because anyone in the know would see immediately by the content, layout, choice of talent and advertisers what your standing is in the Fashion community. This may sound cruel and arrogant, but the reality is, in looking at your web site, I would recommend to anyone wishing to shot for this magazine the following..."buyer beware..."

Getting to shoot for VOGUE,Harpers, Elle, Marie Claire, Numero, V, W, or ID has and never will be a question of "How Much Do I Make?" that is a joke! You couldn't pay VOGUE enough money to shoot for them. The status associated with doing so is the following..."Once you are in VOGUE, you ARE in Vogue" and your phone will slowly start ringing off the wall to shoot Ad campaigns that command 5 too 6 figure numbers. There is a very simple barometer in this business. The less credible the magazine, the more perks it should provide for the team, as the exposure the team get, may be more detrimental to them than if they hadn't at all.

If you want a photographer, stylist, AD, make-up or Hair stylist, set designer, etc...just order Lebook. Now if you didn't know about Lebook, you should NOT be in the Fashion Business. If you want to play the game, learn the rules.

The rules are made by people that have a vested interest...read thier own interest... in keeping the market to themselves....

I once tried to book a spot in a big wedding show.... I made contact with the organizers, brought one of our wedding clients to the show with us... paid for tickets for four, and was subsequently harrased in public, by a couple of regular photographers at the venue, then told by the same organizer to remove my shirt or leave (No refund)... why? I was wearing a tshirt with my company logo on it, and people that (regulars same ones there every year) took offence and said it wasn't fair that they paid to advertise there and I didn't..

Wonderful Wedding (something or other) my a$$.... closed loop protectionist, violating others right to keep the market to themselves is more accurate...

I'm still in business, and alot of people think I do better work than the two photographers that harassed me.

So I routinely put out my flyers on parked cars over the six blocks surrounding the venue every year.. to remind them that freedom of speech trumps protectionism and abuses of civil liberties.... if I had worn a nike tshirt or a budwiser tshirt I would've been advertising for somebody... and there were vendors selling booze and clothing at the show.... didn't see them harassing people!!!

Sometimes the rules need to be broken.... esp when those that make the rules are the ones that benifit most from them...

Sorry to hear that, having lost 2 of my best friend over the years it leaves a huge hole in your life.

But nothing, and I mean nothing, can make you feel more full of springs than a new pup.
While I agree that the simplest answer is often the best answer, in this case, the dog would require some specialized training, even if the 'hole in the heart' void can be filled with a new pet.... there is some mighty big 'Paws' to fill for this families needs....

Thanks a lot everybody for your kind words.

Don, didn't you have a flight scheduled this summer to see the Laurentians? I've been waiting for you.
Desperately trying to get the time to ride my motorcycle out to the maritimes.....
Two things came up this year though...
My Mom died this past spring, and she needed 24-7 care... palitive care in her home for nearly two months... now.. my spouse, Gerri has found her biological father..(she was adopted). he's in Vancouver, so the trip I was planning end of next week, is being changed, We're riding to Vancouver....
I keep telling Mac I'm comming to see him too, but I don't think it'll happen this year, I want at least two weeks to explore Nova Scotia....
O.K., since you can churn out such good excuses, I'll give you a rain check. I just flew to Upper Canada Village (in Morrisburg, Ont.) to change my mind. Spent the day there to see how our ancestors were living. I just concluded after that visit that we are very lazy.
things do change... may be coming your way after all... He's not intersted in seeing her ()
may take our boys in the Jimmy and leave the bike at home, and go to Nova Scotia aftr all...

It is the same in the wedding industry.....

my plan is diversification.

We offer a multimedia package that many of our competitors can't match. A client would need to hire hire several services to get a similar package, and it would cost more to do it that way.

We charge for event coverage.... one flat fee, nothing to negotiate.
price list for a-la-cart items not offered in the package.
