but it IS a more prestigiuos car .
I think I would see Pentax as the Skoda to Canon as the Audi.
Same if not better , but certainly better value.

I've never quite got the prestige thing with cars, they all seem a form of(very expensive)white goods to me.

I agree about the cameras and of course Skoda was taken from being an also ran in the car market to a contender. It'd be nice if Pentax could do the same thing but I doubt it.

Of course, my Samsung has much less 'prestige' than a Pentax but at £299 I can handle the shame
I agree with you... prestiege cars don't make any sense to me... performance cars? you'd have to spend hundreds of thousands to get a car that matches my $3000.00 japanese litrebike....

figures I'd own Pentax...

I was only thinking about this last night...... If I was to start again with my kit would I know consider Pentax?

As much as I like my kit the thing that decided it for me was the availability to expand my kit. With a K7 body in the same price leaque as some of the competitors with no real advantage were I want it i.e low light and fast focus and the current cost of lenses then the answer would now be no.

How many other newbies will now be turning to the 2 more known manufactures over pentax because they are just as affordable?
Wrong question....
How much market share did Pentax lose to the other two major slr players despite being a more affordable system over the last few decades?

Feeb, I've read your last two posts, as well as the post by Gartmore...
must say....
looks like a big hole...keep digging...

Now i am in a position where i need to be able to say 'if i come to your party/wedding/gig/modelling shoot I WILL produce quality images across the range' Be it dark, bright, up or down, i need to produce professional results

And i need a professional camera to do that.
from the first post... I mean really... I make a decent living shooting the events you mentioned there with a couple k10's..... I couldn't even justify upgrading to the k20 because I am getting pro results already...

Good luck with future endeavors, I'm sure you'll find the Nikon can take fine images... and is just as capable of making lousy images as the next camera also.....

On a totally different note .. I have been looking at quite a few videos made with the K-7 in the last few weeks and wish to know something.

Why do females always feel it's necessary to poke out their tongue whenever a camera is pointed in their direction ?
"how dare you point that thing at me... I haven't checked my make-up, or my hair... those things always make me look rediculous.. you wanna make me look foolish? here's you're foolish! now put that away before I hide it somewhere you'll need your Doctor to find it....

I guess....

Thoughtful and interesting post Joe and I agree with pretty much all you say. I just hope George is right and Hoya/Pentax realise the mistake they have made with pricing.
unless of course the original pricing was the mistake, and they realised that bargain basement pricing degrades the percieved value of the product, and won't keep the company solvent in the face of competition with larger production/advertising and distribution channels.... so going niche, premium, upscale, somewhat exclusive and catering to a more well heeled customer is the 'Right" pricing strategy.....

Seriously now, a professional photographer cannot victimse herself because another random person has given her his own opinions. WHat are you going to do when a customer doesn't like a photo you've worked on for days?

What I meant was - Did you read this? It was meant to apologise, explain and clarify.

Feeb, I really did not mean to offend you.

My opinions are mostly due to the fact that I have been in your position, and have (after long considerations) come to a very different conclusion.

I will not need a full frame camera bacause this will not give me but very little differences from an APC pentax. In the type of work you want to do, the very same principle applies. ANd I know because I am doing the same.

Just as for the flash system, your considerations regarding lens range is very inaccurate, and I would be happy to have you try my 31mm ltd, or my DA* zooms, or my 35 year old 100mm Macro - you will not believe the IQ and rendition of these lenses. If you want to believe that nikon lenses are better, please do.

Last but not least; I have considered doing the same move some time ago. I don't know who is paying for your swich, but I would like you to consider this, and consider it well.

D700 - £1730
24-70 f2.8 - £1269
70-200 f2.8 - £1510
SB900 Flash - £330

I don't care about your financial situation, but do consider that high quality nikon lenses are very expensive, and if you are not the one paying for it, I am not sure it is a justifiable expence - seeing that the difference (for you, and me) is going to be minimal.

I am not trolling, or wanting to be rude. I speak out of personal experience, and also, you have asked for this, opening this thread.

Regards,
I have had that happen..... being a pro I smile and politely let them know the price of a re-shoot....
there are always those that think if they criticise or complain enough, the price will somehow go down.... little do they realized that the price of a re-shoot is the same as the original shoot, plus a hefty "Rush" charge for bumping another customers job to squeeze the re-shoot in.....

unless it is a technical issue where I'm at fault....

have a situation right now with a video project, where last minute changes and demands from the client(including moving camera and taking down lighting, and being told "The video is not important, but if you set equipment up here (as agreed upon when I was hired) it might block the view from these (wound up being empty) tables...They are basically requiring a complete re-do on the editing, shooting cannot redo....

will be sending them a quote on Monday that includes:

A) fixing a technical issue on my part (audi glitch no charge)
B) changing some titles (thier fault, they forgot to submit before deadline...no charge)

C) cost of swapping out the pictures they provided, editing out thier mistakes from some speeches (documenting the event as it unfolded was the deal, not editing to fix flubbed lines), changing all the music (again altering thier original playlist).... which I expect is going to be double the original fee and no gaurentee they'll get it before thier new (one week ) deadline.......

I am laying down a challenge to all our k-7 owners....
get your k-7's and make a video... either a product review, or a how to video, or an art peice/commercial to show what this camera can do...
treat it like a paying job from Pentax or a magazine or a client.
then let's post links to the results and see what we can do with this camera.....

I'll be buying one after christmas, but can borrow one for a day in the mean time....
